HSBC Championships 2025: Emma Raducanu storms into quarter-finals at The Queen’s Club
• 3 MINUTE READ
Emma Raducanu is the last Brit standing in the women’s singles draw at the HSBC Championships after she knocked out Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova in her second round clash.
Raducanu needed just an hour and 17 minutes to sweep aside Sramkova as the Brit secured a 6-4, 6-1 victory to reach the quarter-finals.
She’ll now go on to face top seed Qinwen Zheng in the final eight on Friday 13 June.
Raducanu is the only British tennis player to reach the quarter-finals after Katie Boulter and Heather Watson suffered second round exits to Diana Shnaider and Elena Rybakina respectively this afternoon.
“I’m really pleased to get through that, it wasn’t easy”, Raducanu smiled on court following her win. “I don’t think it was my cleanest performance but I’m really happy to have pushed through in some tight moments that decided the first set.
“It was really helpful when it was coming back in the first set and I was letting that lead come back to have a big roar of support to get me through that last service game so I appreciate that."
“I was watching her (Sramkova) play at Billie Jean King Cup and she loves hitting a flat, low and fast ball and on these courts it really stays low and it’s difficult to deal with. I came out ready to expect everything and I’m just happy I was able to get off to a good start and get myself a lead.”
As well as reaching her second WTA Tour quarter-final of the season, Raducanu is also set to re-claim the British No.1 title when the rankings update on Monday.
Her second round victory in West London sees her rise to world No.36 in the WTA live rankings.
Raducanu couldn’t have asked for a better start to her match against the Slovakian, in what was a career-first meeting between the two.
The British wild card faced very little trouble in the early stages of the match as she stormed ahead to a triple break lead to go 5-0 up.
Raducanu was offered the opportunity to serve out the set but a rare double fault kick-started a shaky service game for the former US Open champion, who ended up conceding one of the breaks to give some hope for the world No.41.
Having etched a game on the board, Sramkova was spurred on to a four game run but the Briton soon put a stop to the momentum as she calmly closed out a turbulent opening set with a hold to love.
Raducanu took the opportunity to compose herself off-court before returning to the grass where she immediately reelef off four games on the bounce.
The Brit dropped just five points on serve in the second set to race through her service games, ultimately applying the pressure on Sramkova who was becoming increasingly frustrated.
At 5-1 up, Raducanu looked to wrap up the win quickly. Staring down at a second serve from Sramkova, the former world No.10 fired back a forehand which the Slovakian could barely get her strings on as she dumped it into the net to hand the Brit the win in front of her home crowd.
