Welsh Performances at Wimbledon 2026

• 5 minute read

Another strong year for Welsh tennis saw three Welsh players take to the grass courts of Wimbledon across the senior and junior championships.

Mimi Xu enjoyed her second appearance in the main draw of both the singles and doubles, while Ollie Page and Archie Gray made their Wimbledon debuts. Page competed in the junior singles and doubles events, while Gray played in qualifying for the junior singles and in the junior doubles main draw.

Mimi Xu

Swansea’s Mimi Xu received a Wimbledon wildcard for the second consecutive year. The 18-year-old arrived at SW19 following a breakthrough 2025 season but faced a challenging start to 2026 after an elbow injury kept her out of competition from February until May.

Although she returned in time for the grass-court season, Xu admitted she was still working her way back to full fitness.

Speaking to the BBC before the tournament, Mimi said:

"This year isn't really about trying to repeat specific results; it's about continuing to improve as a player, developing for the future and learning from every opportunity."

In the first round of the singles, Mimi faced Daria Kasatkina, one of the most experienced players on the tour and a former world No.8. Xu performed impressively, taking the second set, but Kasatkina's experience ultimately proved decisive as the Australian came through in three sets.

Mimi also competed in the ladies' doubles alongside fellow Brit Alicia Dudeney. The pair were handed a difficult opening match against former Grand Slam champions Hsieh Su-wei and Wang Xin yu. Despite a strong performance, the British duo were unable to overcome the experienced partnership.

Ollie Page

Before this year, Ollie Page had never competed at a junior Grand Slam. A season of consistent performances on the ITF Junior Circuit, including a J60 title in Latvia, earned him a Wimbledon wildcard.

Ranked No.336 in the world junior rankings heading into the event, Page faced qualifier Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin in the first round. After winning the opening set, Page looked to be heading out of the tournament, trailing 1-5 in the deciding set. However, he produced a remarkable comeback to win the final set 7-5 and secure a memorable victory.

Page went on to defeat world No.4 Å½iga Šeško 6-4, 6-4, before overcoming No.16 seed Kuan-Shou Chen 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals on his Wimbledon debut.

Speaking after his third-round victory, Ollie said:

"I never thought I would get this far. Being a Brit at Wimbledon is one of the best feelings. I really like the crowdsthey help."

His run eventually came to an end in the quarter-finals against Thijs Boogaard, who is already ranked inside the world's top 600 on the ATP Tour. Nevertheless, Page finished as the last remaining British player across all junior singles and doubles events, an incredible achievement as a wild card.

Ollie also competed in the doubles alongside fellow Brit Joshua Craze. The pair produced a strong performance against the eighth seeds but were beaten by the French duo on Court 18.

Archie Gray

Archie Gray, a member of the 14+ National Training Programme delivered in partnership with Cardiff Met University, also made his Grand Slam debut this summer.

Gray competed in qualifying for the junior singles, where he faced Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin. Despite a determined performance, Archie was beaten by the talented Nigerian, who went on to compete in the main draw.

In the doubles, Archie partnered fellow Brit Harrison McElnea. The pair were handed a difficult draw, facing the second seeds, Mikael Antonius and Andres Santamarta Roig, in the opening round. The pairing lost the match against the pairing who went onto reach the finals of this year's tournament.

Reflecting on his Wimbledon experience, Archie said:

"Playing with Centre Court and Court No.1 in the background was a dream come true. I hope to improve further and come back here in future years."

With Mimi Xu competing in the senior championships and both Ollie Page and Archie Gray making their mark in the junior events, Wimbledon 2026 provided another reminder of the exciting talent emerging from Welsh Tennis pathways.
