“Congratulations, guys, you’re having an incredible year, you’re one of the best doubles teams in the world at the moment,” Patten said to their final opponents. “We enjoy some matches against you, hate others. They’re always crazy.
“It’s a very good day for me. My favourite football team, Ipswich Town, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them in Madrid but they’ve just been promoted to the Premier League.”
The British, Finnish duo came back from a break down to claim the opening set in just over half an hour.
However, missed opportunities on their opponents’ first two service games in the second set gave Adreozzi and Guinard a chance to fight their way back. A break to love before taking a 4-1 lead, provided the platform to force the match to a deciding tie-break.
Patten and Heliovaara found themselves trailing 4-0 and then 7-5 in the tie-break but went on to win the last five consecutive points to seal their victory.
