Mutua Madrid Open 2025: Jack Draper beats Lorenzo Musetti to reach maiden Masters 1000 final on clay
• 2 MINUTE READ
Jack Draper’s stellar year continues after the Brit sailed into his first ATP final on clay at the Mutua Madrid Open after beating Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals.
The fifth seed secured yet another straight sets victory over the world No.10, 6-4, 7-6(4) in just under two hours to seal a spot in his first Masters 1000 final on clay.
He’ll now face Norwegian Casper Ruud in a bid to claim his second Masters 1000 title in as many months.
Out of the pair, Draper will head in with the advantage having already won a title at ATP 1000 level before at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells, while Ruud’s biggest title came on the clay at the Barcelona Open back in 2024.
“I felt like both of us, our quality didn’t really drop from the first ball," Draper said in his post-match interview. "Credit to Lorenzo, he’s playing so good on the clay. I’ve played him on the hard courts and grass growing up in the juniors but on the clay, he’s a beast so to win on this court in the semi-finals means so much to me.
“We played a lot during the juniors and it’s nice to play someone you’ve grown up with and to both be living out your dreams on the biggest courts - it’s a battle out there, we’ve both grown as players and people in the last 12-14 months since we last played so I’m proud of that.
“I feel it gives a calmness within to say I’ve won one (a Masters 1000) but Casper (Ruud) has made the final of two grand slams on the clay at Roland Garros, hes just a complete pro and is someone who always gives his best and is so tough to beat. He’s in the final, he’s playing well so I’m going to have to bring my A-game for sure.”
As he’s done all tournament, Draper came out firing from the off in his semi-final clash against the Italian as he eased to an early break. Despite Musetti getting proceedings back on serve, the Briton remained focused, immediately breaking again to find himself 4-1 up in the first set.
As we’ve seen so many times throughout his young career, Draper continued to find his aggressive first serves when he needed it most and piled the pressure on the Monte Carlo Masters runner-up to eventually close out the opening set in 50 minutes.
Musetti showed signs of a comeback in the second set as he looked to level things up against the reigning Indian Wells champion.
Draper faced his first break point of the second at 3-4 but conjured up some fiery winners to claim a gutsy hold.
With neither player managing to find the breakthrough, we headed to a tie-break which saw Draper clinch the first mini-break after Musetti narrowly misfired a forehand to hand the Brit the advantage in the tight battle.
A crucial moment for the Brit, he managed to avoid any further threat from his opponent and went on to punch his ticket to the final with a forehand cross court winner.
