Things are heating up on the ATP and WTA tours as we inch closer to the second Grand Slam of the year in Paris.

Coming off the back of an action-packed week at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the world’s tennis stars now prepare to shine at the first combined ATP and WTA 1000 clay court event of the year – the Mutua Madrid Open.

When is the Mutua Madrid Open 2022?

Qualifying for the WTA 1000 event gets underway on Tuesday 26 April, while the ATP 1000 qualifiers start from Friday 29 April.

First round matches in the WTA main draw will begin from Thursday 28 April through to Saturday 7 May.

The main draw for this year’s ATP event starts from Sunday 1 May with the finals taking place on Sunday 8 May.

Where is the Mutua Madrid Open 2022 being held?

The 20^th edition of the Mutua Madrid Open will once again take place at the Park Manzanares and the world-famous La Caja Magica – otherwise known as The Magic Box.

Since 2009, The Magic Box has played home to the Madrid Open – with three courts under one structure, including the Estadio Manolo Santana, which boasts a capacity of just under 12,500 spectators.

Which British players will be competing in the Mutua Madrid Open 2022?

Emma Raducanu is set to star at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open after playing only her first clay court event this week in Stuttgart. Although new to the surface, Raducanu has impressed so far – starting with a win over world No.50 Tereza Martincova at the Billie Jean King Cup and continuing in Germany this week. As the 19-year-old Brit continues to find her feet on the clay, she’ll be hoping to build on her recent wins with a deep run in Madrid.

World No.10 Cam Norrie leads a strong British group in the men’s singles draw in Madrid, where he will make his debut in 2022. It’s been a brilliant start to the year for Norrie on the hard courts – winning in Delray Beach and the final in Acapulco – but lost on his first match on clay in a close three set clash with Albert Ramos-Vinolas in Monte-Carlo.

Dan Evans is no stranger to the clay, having reached the semi-final in Monte-Carlo last year and the third round in Madrid – losing out to eventual champion Alexander Zverev. The 31-year-old will have been encouraged after his win over Benjamin Bonzi in Monaco last week and eager to bounce back from a defeat to David Goffin.

Andy Murray and Jack Draper join the main draw as wild cards. Murray is a two-time champion in Madrid, having won the title in 2008 and 2015, as well as finishing runner-up in 2016. The former world No.1 hasn’t played at the tournament since 2017 and will be a welcome return for fans this year.

Draper is set to compete in his first ATP Tour event on clay after an impressive start to the 2022 season – winning four ATP Challenger events and claiming his first Masters win in Miami.

Doubles

Fresh off their second ATP 1000 title win in Monte-Carlo last week, Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram will be aiming to go for back-to-back Masters trophies on the clay in Madrid.

Neal Skupski and Wesley Koolhof join a competitive doubles line-up, currently sitting top in the race for the Nitto ATP Finals after finishing runners-up in Barcelona. The British, Dutch duo have already won three titles this year and stand out as one of the partnerships of the season so far, despite having only joined forces in January.

Norrie is also currently in the line-up for the men’s doubles draw, partnering with USA’s Tommy Paul for the first time.
