Miami Open 2026: Francesca Jones defeats idol Venus Williams in first round

• 2 minute read

Francesca Jones enjoyed a special day in her career as she defeated seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams in the first round of the Miami Open presented by Itau.

Jones knocked out the 45-year-old 7-5, 7-5 to realise a dream of beating one of the greatest champions in the history of the sport.

It marked Jones’s maiden victory in a WTA 1000 event and she becomes the first player to win her first match at this level against a former world No.1.

Jones and Wiliams were all smiles as they embraced at the net. In her post-match interview, the Briton shared her admiration for her opponent and a thank you for the role she had on her own career.

“She is a gamechanger,” Jones said. “I told her at the net, I pretty much still say goodnight to her and Serena on the wall of my room at my childhood home every night.

“I was someone who was told could never play tennis – if it wasn’t for those two women, I’m not sure I would have taken the step to do it.

“My Dad took me to watch them on Wimbledon Centre Court at five-years-old and they are the reason I’m here today. To have that win means everything.”

This was Jones’ first WTA win since the start of the year, after an unfortunate season so far with injuries.

Jones – who is a two-time WTA 125 title-winner – broke Williams three times to clinch the opening set in 47 minutes.

The British star showed great resilience on serve in the second, seeing off five of six break points faced, including three at 4-3 down to the former Wimbledon and US Open champion

After a crucial breakthrough at 5-5, Jones made no mistake in serving out a milestone victory over a three-time Miami Open title-winner.

“I’ve had a really rough year so far, lots of injuries and I’m still sick,” she said. “I was coughing all the time and I was worried I was going to make a legend sick as well. I’m just really happy to get through it.”

In the second round, Jones will play fifth seed Jessica Pegula in another tough clash against a home favourite.

Elsewhere, Arthur Fery lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-1, 7-6(4) and Jacob Fearnley was forced to retire against Martin Dammafter losing the first set 6-0.

The second round continues on Friday with Jack Draper, Katie Boulter and Jones all in action.
