County Championships 2018: Highlights from a week of county tennis

• 3 MINUTE READ

The packed summer holiday season of competitive tennis reached its finale with a week of County Championships events across the country.

From August 26 to September 1, juniors and adults from 39 of the nation’s counties battled it out to be crowned County Champion in a festival of tennis and the busiest week in the competitive calendar.

Who said what?

Beverley Lancaster, Competition Organiser for the Warwickshire County Championships 2018
“We’re delighted at how well the County Closed has gone at its new venue – Sutton Coldfield Tennis Club staged it superbly and there was a great atmosphere. There’s been some outstanding tennis – the 12 and Under boys’ final between Ferran and Connor was a real highlight – and Mary Hoggard and Luca Pow showed why they’ve done so well nationally. Everyone loved the fun day and barbecue we staged for the first time and the new social mixed doubles events were very popular too with players of all standards.”

Selena Coburn, Competition Organiser for the Berkshire Junior County Championships 2018
“What an event we’ve had for the 2018 Berkshire Junior County Championships. There was some great athleticism and sportsmanship on show all week, and for the first time in years, all of the girls singles events ran.”

Family affair

Five members of the Champion family competed in the Somerset County Championships – Emma, Lucy, James, Joanna, and Alexandra. Joanna and Alexandra even had to play against each other in the consolation final! All matches were played in good spirit and the family won an award for commitment and dedication.
