Wimbledon 2025: Cam Norrie loses out to two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz
• 3 MINUTE READ
Cam Norrie’s impressive Wimbledon journey has come to an end in the quarter-finals after a flawless display from second seed Carlos Alcaraz.
It was a truly devastating performance from the five-time Grand Slam champion, who needed just an hour and 39 minutes to defeat the Brit 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 and secure his place in the semi-finals for the third consecutive year.
Alcaraz hit 39 winners on his way to defeating the second British player of his campaign and becoming the second Spanish player in history to reach the men’s singles semi-finals at Wimbledon on three occasions – after Rafael Nadal who reached eight.
Despite missing out on reaching the semi-finals for the second time in his career, it’s been a standout tournament for Norrie, who has looked back to his best over the last couple of weeks.
The British No.3 knocked out HSBC Championships semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut, 12th seed Frances Tiafoe, Matteo Bellucci and a spirited Nicolas Jarry during his run to the final eight, and will look to draw on the positives heading into the upcoming hard court swing.
Alcaraz was full of praise for Norrie following his win and highlighted how pleased he is to see the former world No.8 back competing at this level on the biggest stages in tennis.
Speaking on getting over the line against the home favourite, Alcaraz said, “I’m really happy with the level I played today against a really difficult player like Cam. He’s an amazing player, an amazing guy as well - I’m pretty sure there’s no one who works harder than him.
I’m really happy to see him fighting for great things, happy to see him playing in these kind of matches.
“Being able to play another semi-final here at Wimbledon is super special, it’s something I wanted to achieve at the beginning of the week - to go as far as I can and give myself the chance to play a semi-final here - it’s going to be great.”
It was a new environment for Norrie who was contesting his first match on Centre Court this year, but with a sea of British fans cheering him on, the Briton made a fast start to the highly-anticipated quarter-final meeting against the reigning champion.
Norrie raced ahead to a 0-40 lead on Alcaraz’s opening service game but as he’s done multiple times over the last few months, the Spaniard played the pressure points well - putting away an ace and a couple of thunderous forehands to see off four break points.
With some early opportunities having come and gone, the British No.3 soon found himself with his back against the wall as Alcaraz sent a backhand return down the line to bring up two break points of his own.
The Brit managed to save the first with an ace but a costly double fault handed the defending champion the break, before he later secured a second to wrap up the set in just 29 minutes.
The five-time Grand Slam champion gave Norrie nothing on serve, claiming 89% of points behind his first serve (50/56) and showing exceptional hands at the net where he won 22/31 points (79%).
The Brit struggled to match Alcaraz’s intensity as the 22-year-old opened up a 4-2 lead in the second before once again hunting down the double break to take a two set lead over the former Indian Wells champion.
Alcaraz is currently on a 19-match win streak at Wimbledon and has won each of his last 23 matches at all tournaments - the longest of his career - and the confidence in his game evidently shone through.
At 5-2 in the third, Norrie netted a backhand to give Alcaraz a glance at a first match point but the Brit dug in, forcing the error out of his oppient before securing the hold to force Alcaraz to serve out the win.
A serve and volley from the world No.2 brought up his second match point and while Norrie fought hard to hang in the battle, he wasn't able to return a booming serve from the racket of his opponent as he sent the ball into the net to seal Alcaraz's spot in the final four once again.
