US Open 2025: Joe Salisbury & Neal Skupski fight into men’s doubles final
• 2 MINUTE READ
Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski are into their second Grand Slam final of the season after pulling off a comeback win over Michael Venus and Yuki Bhambri.
Salisbury and Skupski fought back from a set down against the 14th seeds to secure a 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-4 win in two hours and 53 minutes.
Salisbury and Skupski will now bid to become the first all-British pair since 1903 to win the US Open men’s doubles title on Saturday, where they’ve set up a clash against Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
The Brits also faced the Spanish, Argentine duo in the Roland Garros final, where Salisbury and Skupski narrowly lost out in a 6-0, 6-7(5), 7-5 defeat.
For Salisbury, he will bid to win his fourth US Open men's doubles title, while Skupski will be hoping his partner’s luck at Flushing Meadows can guide him to a first crown in New York.
Speaking on what it’d mean for the all-British pair to win the men’s doubles title at Flushing Meadows, Salisbury said, "It'd be great to put that right,".
"There's been a lot of British Grand Slam titles, but not too many with all-British pairings. It's great now that there's a couple of top teams and it'd be great to put our names in the history books as an all-British pairing."
After a tight opening set, which saw the Brits fight back from a break down to force a tie-break, the 14th seeds took control – dropping just two points on their way to claiming a one set lead.
Riding the momentum, the Kiwi, Indian pair kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second as they raced out to an immediate break. Some sharp returning and net play soon saw Venus and Bhambri open up a 3-1, 40-30 lead but Salisbury held his nerve – producing some gutsy serves to escape unscathed.
Having saved a break point of their own in the fifth game, the Roland Garros runners-up soon took their chances in the return games. Skupski unleashed a ferocious forehand that Venus returned into the net, allowing the Brits to recover the deficit and draw level at 3-3.
Salisbury and Skupski were the first to surrender the mini-break in the second set tie-break but then reeled off five of the last seven points to steal the set from Venus and Bhambri’s grasp.
The Brits had the upper hand in the decider and set the tone for a dominant finish by breaking their opponents in the first game of the third.
At 5-3 up, Salisbury and Skupski earned a trio of match points on the Venus serve, but couldn’t convert any of them. However, former world No.1 Skupski had no issues closing out victory on his own serve – sealing a hold to love as Bhambri drifted a forehand return long, haning the all-British pair a spot in the final in New York.
