Roland Garros 2024: Andy Murray to face Stan Wawrinka in first round as singles draws are announced

• 2 MINUTE READ

The Roland Garros draw has been announced, with former world No.1 Andy Murray stealing the headlines as he gears up to take on three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in a mouth-watering first round battle.

Murray, who is one of six British hopefuls contesting the French Open title across the men’s and women’s singles draw, will face long-term rival Wawrinka in a tough opening round clash. The two have faced each other an outstanding 22 times in their careers, including the first round of the 2020 French Open, with Murray currently leading the head-to-head 13-9.

Their last meeting came at the 2022 Cincinnati Masters, where Murray edged the win 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-5. Should Murray win the opener against Wawrinka, he’ll take on compatriot Cam Norrie in an all-British second round battle.

Meanwhile, British No.1 Norrie will open up his Roland Garros campaign against world No.57 Pavel Kotov, while Jack Draper is set to face a qualifier or lucky loser as he bids to reach the second round in Paris for the first time in his young career.

If Draper manages to overcome his round one opponent, he could set up a potential meeting with world No.3 and reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in what could be a blockbuster viewing should the Spaniard also win his first match.

Dan Evans has been dealt a tough draw against world No.13 and former Roland Garros quarter-finalist Holger Rune in a career-first meeting between the Brit and the Danish star. Should Evans be able to cause an upset by knocking out the 13 seeded player, he'll face either Italy’s Flavio Cobolli or a qualifier/lucky loser.

Over in the women’s draw, Katie Boulter – who will enter a Grand Slam as a seeded player for the first time - will kick-start her bid for Grand Slam glory against former world No.2 Paula Badosa. The Spaniard has been struggling with injuries over the last 12 months but has recently found her form on the dirt, reaching the round of 16 at the Italian Open where she narrowly lost out to reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff in three sets.

British No.2 Harriet Dart faces a tough challenge in 27 seeded Linda Noskova. The 19-year-old Czech began her clay court campaign at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix where she was knocked out in straight sets by 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu, before going on to reach the round of 32 at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia just a couple of weeks ago.

Dart has spent her clay court swing competing on the WTA circuit and recently came through two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw of the WTA 1000 event in Madrid, proving she's got what it takes to beat the clay.
