Recent results
Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara have maintained a flawless start to their Nitto ATP Finals campaign with the pair securing a third victory to finish top of the Mike Bryan Group.
Competing against 2020 champions Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic, Patten and Heliovaara produced an inspired comeback victory, winning 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
The seventh seeds had already booked their spot to the semi-finals on Tuesday after winning their second match against US Open champions Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell, but saw out the group stages undefeated to place them in fine stead heading into Saturday's semi-finals.
It was an unsettled start for the British No.1 who was broken on the opening service game of the match, as the Dutch, Croatian duo held firm to take a one set advantage.
Trailing a set, the reigning Wimbledon champions soon re-grouped as they conjured up the perfect response - capturing the only break of the second to level the scoreboard to a set apiece and force a nail-biting match deciding tie-break.
There, the British-Finnish duo rallied to an 8-5 lead, but Koolhof - who was playing his final match before retirement - and Mektic fought back to draw level. Despite the former champions threatening a comeback, Patten and Heliovaara stayed clincial in the high-pressure moments to clinch the last two points and secure victory on their third match point.
The evening session will see Purcell and Thompson take on second seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in a bid to join Patten and Heliovaara in the last four.
Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara have become the first doubles pair to book their spot in the semi-finals of the Nitto ATP Finals after a second straight sets victory in the Mike Bryan group.
In a repeat of this year’s Wimbledon final, Patten and Heliovaara defeated Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell 7-6(3), 7-5 in an hour and 37 minutes.
Their meeting at Wimbledon saw three tie-breaks and so it was again in the opening set at the Finals, with Patten and Heliovaara saving the only two break points in another close battle.
Last month’s Stockholm Open winners have risen to the occasion in the big moments so far in Turin and just as they did against the world No.1s on Sunday, they saw out the tie-break with five of the last six points.
Momentum in their favour, the Wimbledon champions managed to clinch the first break of the match early in the second set. With the scores locked at 2-2, the seventh seeded team broke Thompson to love – finishing with a double fault on the Aussie’s serve.
Patten had the chance to serve out the match at 5-4, but nervous energy seemed to get the better of him as a series of errors gave the Australians a break back and a lifeline.
The British No.1 more than made up for it on the following game – connecting on a forehand return winner at break point to restore the lead.
Second time of asking they made no mistake. Heliovaara held out to love to clinch their second win so far in Turin.
Britain’s Henry Patten and doubles partner Harri Heliovaara got their Nitto ATP Finals campaign off to the perfect start – defeating the world No.1s in their first match of the Mike Bryan group.
Wimbledon champions Patten and Heliovaara beat Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 7-6(2), 6-4 during the evening session in Turin.
Patten is hoping to become only the third British player to lift an ATP Finals title after Andy Murray (2016) and Joe Salisbury (2022 & 2023).
In a tense opening set both teams saw break point opportunities come and go but neither side could find the wrestle momentum in their favour.
Patten and Heliovaara kept their composure in the big moments and raced out to a 6-2 lead in the tie-break, before the Finnish star punched away a volley off the Brit’s serve to take the set.
The duo lost to Granollers and Zeballos on their previous meeting in Rome this year, but this time the Wimbledon champions proved too strong for the top-ranked ATP doubles team.
On their first break point of the second set, Heliovaara found a pinpoint return to give them the initial advantage. From there they showed little signs of wavering – dropping just five points on serve throughout the set to see out the win in an hour and 30 minutes.
Patten and Heliovaara still have to play Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson – who won their first match earlier in the day – as well as Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic.
