Why is the Davis Cup one of the biggest tennis events in the world?

The Davis Cup is a team tennis event including many of the world’s best nations throughout the course of the season.

Qualifiers are played at points through the tennis calendar, all leading up to the Finals as one of the last events of the year.

So what makes the Davis Cup so special? And why do all the best players want to play in it? Here’s a quick overview of what makes the Davis Cup one of the biggest tournaments in tennis.

The World Cup of tennis

The Davis Cup is also widely known as the men’s World Cup of tennis – bringing together the leading nations from across the world.

With 155 nations competing, the Davis Cup is the biggest annual team sports competition in the world – including sports outside of tennis.

If you’re the Davis Cup title-holders, you are the men’s world champions. It doesn’t get any bigger than that.

Great Britain has been world champions 10 times, most recently in 2015 thanks to the likes of Andy Murray, Jamie Murray and more.

Over 125 years of history

The Davis Cup first started in 1900, making it one of the longest standing competitions in tennis history.

Great Britain was actually one of the two founding nations of the Davis Cup alongside the USA, playing the first-ever match in Boston over 125 years ago.

During it’s history, there have been 16 different winners of the Davis Cup, with USA as the most successful team with 32 titles.

There have been so many incredible ties, matches and moments in that time and more history continues to be written every season.

2019 saw the introduction of the revised Davis Cup Finals format, in which the top eight teams from the qualifiers come together for a one-week straight knock out competition.

In that time, the Italians have dominated with three straight titles from 2023-2025 and are creating history of their own as one of the best sides of the last decade.

Best players in the world competing

What makes the Davis Cup so special? The players.

This annual World Cup of tennis is one of the titles all the biggest players want to win in their careers and the best stars in the world come out in force for the Davis Cup.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev have all won the Davis Cup in the last 15 years and there are even more tennis legends who have got their hands on the trophy throughout its history.

So what keeps them coming back for more? It’s the chance to compete for the biggest international team trophy for their country and playing against the top names in the sport.

Team events mean more

While tennis is for the large part a solo sport (or played with one doubles partner), the Davis Cup is unique in that it’s a team event.

It’s one of very few team tennis competitions, where players join forces with up to four other players and a captain from their own nation.

Many of the players who compete in the Davis Cup will always say that playing for your country in that team environment does just mean that little bit more.

This is also felt in the crowds for Davis Cup ties. The fans passion and support for their nation is unlike any other tennis event you’ll see throughout the season. Think loud chants, endless cheering and drumming from start to finish - atmospheres don't get much better than that.
