Billie Jean King Cup: Meet the British team to face Czech Republic

The Billie Jean King Cup is back, and with the countdown underway, Captain Anne Keotavong has named the first four players set to face to the Czech Republic in Great Britain’s qualifier.

The teams will go head-to-head from the 15-16 April at Tennis Club I.CLTK, Prague, knowing a win will put them through to the finals.

Find out who will be flying the flag for Great Britain in Prague next month...

Emma Raducanu

  • Age: 19
  • World Ranking: 13
  • Ties Played: 0
  • Billie Jean King Cup Record: 0-0

After being selected for the team back in 2020, Raducanu could be in line to make her debut at the Billie Jean King Cup this year.

Raducanu took the tennis world by storm last summer as she became the youngest player to have been crowned US Open Champion, and the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade’s Wimbledon triumph back in 1977.

With her maiden appearance for the Billie Jean King Cup on the cards, the British No.1 will look to break entirely new records in Prague, alongside recognition of her new Colour Holder status to be awarded upon her first tie.

Harriet Dart

  • Age: 25
  • World Ranking: 122
  • Ties Played: 3
  • Billie Jean King Cup Record: 2-2

Having been nominated to represent Great Britain for a fifth time, Dart has her eye on victory for Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Czech Republic.

Dart had a spectacular start to the season, qualifying for Indian wells – widely acknowledged as the fifth Grand Slam – and going on to beat the former World No.3, Elina Svitolina, followed by Estonia’s, Kaia Kanepi, to qualify for the last 16. Unfortunately for Dart, she lost out on a place in the quarter finals to the very experienced, Madison Keys.

With her flying start to the season promising a breakthrough into the top 100, Dart will have confidence going into the tie, with a desire to succeed after having previously won two doubles matches for her country.

Katie Swan

  • Age: 22
  • World Ranking: 213
  • Ties Played: 5
  • Billie Jean King Cup Record: 4-1

Swan will be Great Britain’s most experienced player to join the squad for their tie against the Czech Republic next month. At the mere age of 16, Swan made her mark in the tournament after winning two singles matches and losing just one in Great Britain’s 2016 tie against Israel.

This year so far, she's won the title at the W25 Santo Domingo, adding to her previous nine ITF singles titles across her career.

Sonay Kartal

  • Age: 20
  • World Ranking: 392
  • Ties Played: 0
  • Billie Jean King Cup Record: 0-0

The 20-year-old is set to join the British Billie Jean King Cup squad for the first time in her career to date.

Kartal has developed a taste for winning in recent years, winning four of her last five ITF singles events – including two events on home soil in Birmingham and Glasgow. The Brighton-born star is in incredible form boasting a 16-2 record across four events in 2022.
