Australian Open 2024: Murray to face 30th seed Etcheverry in first round as singles draws are announced

• 3 MINUTE READ

The singles draws for the Australian Open have been announced, with five-time former runner-up Andy Murray set for a first round battle with 30th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Murray, who is one of seven British hopefuls in the men’s and women’s singles draws this year, will be the only Brit to take on a seeded player in the first round when he faces Argentina’s Etcheverry.

The two have faced each other twice before, both coming last season, with Murray winning in Indian Wells and Etcheverry in Basel. The 24-year-old Argentinian claimed is first Grand Slam win at the Australian Open last year and his best major result came at Roland Garros where he made the quarter-finals.

A third round for Murray could see him take on a familiar rival in top seed at 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic.

Elsewhere, British No.1 and 19th seed Cam Norrie opens his campaign against world No.19 Juan Pablo Varillas. If Norrie can defeat the Peruvian in round one and get through to the third round, he could be set to face 11th seed and former French Open runner-up Casper Ruud.

Dan Evans has been dealt a tough draw against former world No.21 Lorenzo Sonego in the first round, before a potential second round against two-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Meanwhile, Jack Draper will be hoping to continue his strong form from Adelaide this week and clinch his first Australian Open win as he takes on American Marcus Giron.

In the women’s draw, Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage and Emma Raducanu have all avoided top seeds in the opening round.

British No.1 and world No.57 has drawn China’s Yue Yuan for her first match at Melbourne Park. Yuan made her Australian Open debut last season but went out in the opening round – while Boulter is coming in having reached the fourth round at the US Open in September.

If she were to progress to the second round, she could be play 12th seed Qinwen Zheng.

In her maiden appearance in the Australian Open main draw Burrage faces Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch. Korpatsch won her first and only singles title last year at Cluj-Napoca, while it was also a year of many firsts for Burrage, reaching the final at the Rothesay Open Nottingham and breaking into the top 100.

Finally, Raducanu had been drawn against 31-year-old American Shelby Rogers. The young Brit recently returned from long-term injury and hasn’t played a Grand Slam since the Australian Open last year.

If Raducanu and Boulter were both to make the third round, they would face each other in an all-star British clash.

There could be an additional eighth Brit into the main draw singles this year, if 24-year-old Oliver Crawford manages to beat Vit Kopriva.
