Next Gen: Get to know Junior Australian Open semi-finalist, Ranah Stoiber
Playing alongside Britain’s biggest stars and reaching a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time – it’s been a busy first month of the year for 17-year-old rising star, Ranah Stoiber.
One of the top young British talents in the game, Stoiber has been a mainstay at the top of the ITF Junior game for the last year or so – finishing runner-up at J1 Casablanca, as well as reaching the quarter-finals at J1 Santa Croce Sull’Arno and J1 Roehampton, before a final eight appearance at the US Open.
This is the first in our new exclusive ‘Next Gen’ interview series for Advantage, where we’ll introduce you to some of Britain’s future tennis stars.
You’re fresh off the back of a first Grand Slam semi-final at the Junior Australian Open. How did it feel to feel to reach the latter stages in a major tournament for the first time?
It was amazing to be honest. It was only my second time in Australia, playing in Melbourne and it was really special for me as my first junior Grand Slam semi-final. I just loved the atmosphere there.
I’ve taken a lot of confidence out of it – as I say it was my first Slam semi-final and hopefully, I can go on to do more in the future.
My coach Nick Cavaday was out there with me, he was great at just supporting me all the way, giving me the advice that I needed and just helping me each day.
You started the season with the GB team at the United Cup – what was that experience like? How much did you take away from it?
The United Cup was so special for me, I think it was the perfect way to start my trip. I was so happy and just had so much fun out there and learnt a lot from all the other players.
It definitely had an impact (on performances at the Australian Open), it definitely gave me a lot more knowledge than when I first got on my flight to head out to Australia. I was just really inspired to get out there, work hard and do my thing every day.
Playing with those players was an amazing experience, everyone was so helpful, supportive and really welcoming. The guys were very lively on the WhatsApp chat every day!
It was so much better than I expected, and I already had high hopes for it.
For those who have never seen you play before, how would you describe your playing style and what are you like off court as well?
On the court I think I’m pretty chilled, but I like to stay really focused on my match and my level, so I can just do my thing. I’d describe myself as a bit of an all-court player and I can be quite aggressive, but I think I’m pretty quick around the court as well.
Off court I’d say I’m pretty chilled as well haha! I just like to relax, be with my friends, catch up with them and I love to sleep. I watch quite a bit of Netflix too – I’ve been watching Manifest recently while I was on the plane back from Australia.
How did you first start playing tennis?
I got into tennis through a family friend. We were at their house, and they had a racket so I just started swinging it about and my Mum and her friend thought I looked quite natural and said they thought I should get into it.
I went down to my local club – Thistleworth Tennis Club is Isleworth – had a few lessons and then that was it, haven’t looked back since.
Which player do you look up to the most?
I look up to Ash Barty quite a bit. When I saw her play for the first time, I could see myself at her level and I think we play in quite similar ways. Seeing how good she can be and how fast she was – I think I can be the same.
What have been some of the highlights of your career so far?
I thought I had a good run at my first W100 event in Ilkley last summer. I played quite a few good players and I just loved playing out on the grass in front of a home crowd – it was a pretty nice atmosphere.
Also, my first deep run at a junior Grand Slam where I got to the quarter-finals at the US Open on my first time playing there.
What are you most looking forward to for the rest of the 2023 season?
I’m really looking forward to the summer grass court season – I’m already thinking about it. I’m so excited to get on the grass again as I missed Junior Wimbledon last year so I’m keen to get back out there this year. Whether it’s juniors or seniors I’m hopeful I can get a good run out there.
