Welsh tennis aces shine

Welsh tennis players made their mark as Zara Richmond won her first National level singles competition, Mimi Xu and her GB teammates claimed bronze in the Billy Jean King Juniors Cup, Josh Kerr finish runner-up in the Learning Disability Tennis National Finals 2023, and Niall Pickerd-Barua reached the final of the under-14s Tennis Europe event at Liverpool.

Zara took the honours at the under-9 National Tour South held at the National Tennis Centre, winning all of her matches in straight sets.

GB lost out to the Czech Republic in the semi-finals of the Billy Jean King Juniors Cup by Gainbridge but finished strongly by beating host nation Spain in the 3rd/4th playoff, Mimi winning her match against Charo Esquiva Banuls 7-6, 6-4.

Josh lost in the Learning Disability Tennis National Finals 2023 at Bolton Arena to good friend Aidan Moody 4-2, 4-5 (6), 5-10 in the Yellow singles Division 1. He and partner Ronan Cacace also won a bronze medal in the Yellow doubles competition.

Niall, who was seeded fifth at the Tennis Europe Liverpool Junior International, dropped just one set on his way to the final, where he lost out to fellow Brit Brandon Ratanavong 2-6, 4-6.
