Megan Davies Reflects on Her Time at Loughborough as a Back-to-Back BUCS Champion.

• 5 minute read

Megan Davies has enjoyed an outstanding few years as part of the Women’s 1st team at Loughborough University, helping the team achieve remarkable success across both league and cup competitions. We caught up with the North Wales player to reflect on her journey so far and what comes next.

Megan’s tennis journey began at just four years old when a coach from Wrexham Tennis Centre visited her primary school. She quickly fell in love with the sport and began training at the centre, developing alongside some of the top players in North Wales. She remained based in Wrexham until the age of 16, when she moved to the University of Bath Tennis Academy to continue her development in a high-performance environment.

As a junior, Megan showed strong potential, competing in junior ITF tournaments around the world and representing Wales at the Four Nations on several occasions. One of her standout moments came in her U18 years, when she was part of the Welsh team that won the Four Nations title on home soil in Wrexham. She also enjoyed multiple successes at the Welsh National Championships, winning titles in both singles and doubles.

“I am very proud to be Welsh, so to be a Welsh national champion was definitely a highlight for me.”

Following her junior career, Megan took to the United States, competing for Division I side Weber State University. Megan helped make history by playing a key role in the team reaching the NCAA Championships for the first time in 22 years after winning their conference title.

After her time in America, Megan returned to the UK to join Loughborough University. She has been part of a dominant Women’s 1st team, winning back-to-back national titles and going unbeaten throughout the season in both singles and doubles matches across league and cup competitions. Individually, she claimed gold in doubles alongside teammate Eliz Maloney and secured back-to-back bronze medals in singles.

Megan believes her time at Loughborough has taken her game to another level.

“Training in such a high-performance environment has really helped push my game on even further.”

Alongside her university tennis, Megan has also competed regularly on the ITF circuit, earning a world doubles ranking. One of the standout moments of her career came when she received a wildcard into the Lexus Wrexham Open a full-circle moment at the venue where her journey began.

“Playing in the Lexus Wrexham Open will be a forever memory for me. Playing at such a high level tournament in the place it all started for me at four years old made it so meaningful. It’s amazing to have a major tournament in North Wales, and I hope it inspires the next generation.”

As Megan prepares to graduate from Loughborough this year, her focus now turns to doing her PhD somewhere else in the UK and continuing to play tennis tournaments alongside her education.
