Period Dignity is a top priority for Merthyr Tennis Club
• 2 MINUTE READ
More tennis and padel venues are opening tennis up across Wales, and this month we’re shining the spotlight on the great work at Merthyr Tennis Club in South Wales
Over the past six months, the Club has taken steps to make tennis more inclusive and accessible for women and girls by working with the Welsh Government to deliver the Period Dignity Action Plan for Wales.
As part of this project, the club is offering free period products to players, helping ensure greater dignity and support around menstruation for women and girls.
The support is being funded by the Welsh Government ‘Period Dignity’ campaign & through a Sport Wales 'Be Active Wales' grant. The initiative is part of a wider commitment to period dignity, a movement aimed at removing the silent barriers many women and girls face when it comes to periods.
The Welsh Government has worked for several years on financial initiatives to tackle period poverty. Since 2018 they have invested almost nine million pounds to ensure that young people and those on low incomes have access to free period products.
Merthyr Tennis Club are delivering this work in partnership with Merthyr Council, and the Club is one of the first LTA registered Period Proud venues in Wales.
Russell Evans, Chairman at Merthyr Tennis Club, said:
“As a club we are striving to ensure everyone has access to safe, dignified self-care, helping promote inclusivity across gender, age, or status by supporting women with free resources they need. A huge thank you to Merthyr Council and the Welsh Government Period Dignity grant scheme for making these available to our female players that play at our club”.
The Period Dignity Action Plan movement is about more than just free products it’s about building a culture where women and girls feel truly supported in the sport, without stigma. Ensuring women and girls can remain involved in playing and enjoying tennis throughout the year will help more people feel welcomed into the sport.
