British players looking forward to the start of the Lexus Wrexham Open this weekend

• 5 minute read

A number of leading British players, including Billie Jean King Cup star Jodie Burrage, are heading to North Wales to play in the Lexus Wrexham Open which starts this weekend.

A high-quality entry list, led by Armenia's Alina Charaeva, who has just broken into the world's top 100, will compete in the World Tennis Tour W100 event, the biggest women's tournament, outside of the grass court season in the UK this year.

The first qualifying round starts on the indoor courts at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre on Sunday morning, with the main draw matches beginning next Tuesday.

Burrage, part of the Great Britain team for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in China last month, has a career-high world ranking of 85 and has featured in the second round at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open.

The other Brits set to play in Wrexham include Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Amelia Rajecki, Victoria Allen and Daniella Britton.

Dudeney, the current British number seven, impressively beat Antonia Ruzic - a recent top 50 player and the top seed - at the WTA 125 Samsun Open in Turkey last week. Dudeney has won five World Tennis Tour titles this year, including a W50 event in Nottingham in July.

Klugman, who won her first World Tennis Tour title last month, a W50 tournament in Portugal, played Barbora Krejcikova, a former Wimbledon champion, in the first round at SW19 this summer. Ranked No.1 in the world junior rankings earlier this year, Klugman, 17, was runner-up in the junior girls' final at last year's French Open, becoming the first British player to reach a junior final at Roland Garros for 49 years.

Rajecki won the World Tennis Tour W35 Roehampton title in August after being runner-up at W50 Dublin a week earlier, while Allen has reached four World Tennis Tour quarter-finals since July.

Britton, 15, set to receive a wild card to play in Wrexham, won both the under-16s and under-18s titles at the Lexus Junior National Championships earlier this year. She took her place in the Wimbledon qualifying draw in June, taking the opening set against Julie Riera before her more experienced Argentinian opponent, who has been a top 100 player, hit back to win.

Dave Courteen, the Lexus Wrexham Open promoter, said: "It's always exciting to find out which British players will be competing in Wrexham, and they can certainly look forward to receiving plenty of support.

"Last year's first Lexus Wrexham Open saw an all-British final with Mimi Xu beating Mika Stojsavljevic, but there will be new Wrexham finalists this time. Mimi is now on a scholarship at an American college and is set to play in Canada next week, while Mika has been given a wild card to a WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo.

"Hopefully some of the other British players can enjoy excellent runs at this year's event and we look forward to welcoming them and all the international players to Wrexham.

"The overall entry list for this year's tournament is significantly stronger than 12 months ago, which is great news for spectators looking forward to the return of world-class women's tennis to North Wales.

"We have a lot of players from the world's top 200, including a number currently ranked in the top 150, so that's fantastic for the tournament."

Charaeva, having hit the headlines by beating newly-crowned world number one Elena Rybakina during a run to the fourth round of the China Open earlier this month, is the highest ranked player heading to Wrexham after breaking into the world's top 100 for the first time.

Italy's Lucrezia Stefanini, Czechia's Dominika Salkova, Germany's Noma Noha Akugue and Spain's Marina Bassols Ribera are also currently inside the world's top 130 as they prepare to play in Wrexham.

Ticket prices, which include a 44-page tournament programme, start from £8 for adults and £4 for under-16s, with finals day tickets to enjoy both the singles and doubles finals costing £25 and £19 respectively.

A tournament pass to watch all matches throughout the week, priced £75 for adults and £57 for under-16s, is also available to buy from the Lexus Wrexham Open website at https://wrexhamopentennis.com/tickets/
