West of Scotland retain 'Tea Cup' as counties come together

• 3 MINUTE READ

West of Scotland retained the prestigious ‘Tea Cup’ as the four Scottish counties came together for an exciting day of tennis action.

Formally known as the Scottish Junior Inter-County Championships, the annual event for 18U players has been running since 1966 and is one of the highlights of the domestic calender.

In the morning semi-finals at Thorn Park LTC in Bearsden, West got off to the perfect start by beating East of Scotland 7-2, setting up a final with North of Scotland, who ran out 8-1 winners over South of Scotland.

And it was West who proved too strong in the final, overcoming North 5-2 to reclaim the trophy, while East secured third place with a 8-1 victory over South.

West of Scotland team: Findlay Pratt, Nikhil Bollapragada, Lucas Nolte, Tristan Mills, Olivia McGuire, Emma Barlow, Nikemi Olafare & Elisa Gibson. Team captain: Jordan Gray.

MacKinlay & Thomson reach back-to-back finals

James MacKinlay and Connor Thomson went close to back-to-back titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour following a victory in Roehampton last week.

They began their campaign in Aldershot by beating the team they had dispatched in the Roehampton final, James Story and Matthew Summers.

After reaching the final without dropping a set, the Scottish duo faced fourth seeds Lui Maxted and Finn Murgett, but were edged out 4-6, 6-7 (6) after a hard-fought battle.

Scots play their way to Wimbledon

Congratulations to all the players who took part in the Play Your Way to Wimbledon finals at the All England Club.

Britain’s largest mass participation tennis competition sees players across a range of abilities – including junior, adult and disability categories – pick up a racket to compete in and enjoy fun matches.

Aidan Moody was in top form, claiming the title in the Learning Disability singles, while there were silver medals for Illia Snaksarov in the 14U boys’ singles and Anna Curtis & Ella Morrison in the 18U girls’ doubles.
