Robertson wins first pro title, Stewart's run for Wimbledon & junior success
• 4 MINUTE READ
Charlie Robertson picked up the first pro title of his career after teaming up with GB Davis Cup player Liam Broady on the ITF Tour.
The 18-year-old Scot has enjoyed a brilliant first season with Wake Forest University, winning the coveted NCAA Championship, following a fantastic end to his junior career which included reaching the semi-finals of the boys’ US Open.
Robertson and Broady dropped just one set en route to the title at the M25 event in Elvas, Portugal, as they needed a match tie-break to overcome the second seeds in the semis.
And the unseeded duo then took out the top seeds Dan Added and Johannes Seeman 7-5, 6-2 to get their hands on the trophy.
Elsewhere on the ITF tour, James MacKinlay and Liam Hignett reached the final of the doubles at the M25 in Bako, Spain.
After going through three rounds without dropping a set, MacKinlay and Hignett were beaten 3-6, 5-7 by former Lexus Glasgow Challenger champion Clement Chidekh and Mark Whitehouse.
Stewart goes close to Wimbledon dream
Hamish Stewart produced some top form to put himself on the brink of a first Grand Slam appearance at Wimbledon.
Stewart battled through the Wimbledon wildcard play-offs, beating Liam Broady 7-5 in the third set to secure a place in qualifying.
During a strong week at Roehampton, the 25-year-old pulled off a thrilling comeback against Luca van Assche, coming from 7-3 down in the deciding match tie-break to win 11-9.
It wasn’t to be, though, in the final round of qualifying as Stewart went down in four sets to Leandro Riedi.
Lumsden reaches semis at Eastbourne
Maia Lumsden teamed up with Harriet Dart to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Eastbourne Open as the pair got some match practice under their belts for Wimbledon.
The duo won their first two rounds without dropping a set and then took the lead over Marie Bouzkova and Anna Danilina in the semis.
But it wasn’t to be for the Scottish doubles no 1 and her GB Billie Jean King Cup teammate, as they were edged out 9-11 in the match tie-break.
Anna & Aadya defend ITF junior doubles
There was Scottish success as the two-week Edinburgh swing got under way at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre with the Lexus Junior International.
Anna McKnight and Aadya Iyer Chadalawada defended their girls’ doubles title in impressive fashion, carving through the draw without dropping a set.
McKnight was also defending the singles title and put up a strong fight, reaching the semi-finals, where she was edged out by the eventual champion.
There was also a quarter-final for Hanna Augustynska, who only just missed out on a place in the last four after a three-set battle.
In the boys’ doubles, a semi-final for Thomas Dixon and Freddie Mailer saw them fall just short to the top seeds.
The action continues at Craiglockhart this week with the Lexus Scottish Junior Open.
