Reid claims first-ever Erste Bank Open title as Stewart & Thomson win in Sheffield

• 4 MINUTE READ

Gordon Reid continued his top form by winning the first ever wheelchair competition at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, which is best known as an ATP 500 event.

And he claimed the title in impressive fashion, beating Stéphane Houdet 6-3, 6-1 in the final, which was played out on the centre court before a big crowd.

“It’s been an incredible experience to be here,” said Reid. “Everyone has shown us great appreciation from the first minute - you really feel part of the tournament family.

“Playing today on centre court with such an amazing atmosphere was a dream come true.”

Stewart & Thomson lift title in Sheffield

There was Scottish success in Sheffield as Hamish Stewart and Connor Thomson picked up a title on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

Another fantastic week for both Scots saw Stewart pick up his eighth and Thomson his sixth pro title of the year.

The pair kicked off their campaign at the M15 with a match tie-break win over Patrick Brady and Matthew Howse and had to come through a nail-biting semi-final, beating Phillip Jordan and Joe Tyler 13-11 in the decider.

That set up a final with top seeds Clement Chidekh and Mark Whitehouse, but Stewart and Thomson proved too strong, winning 6-3, 6-4.

Thomson, who was appearing in his eighth consecutive ITF doubles final, said: “It’s been a hell of a couple of months, I’ve been very lucky to play with (Hamish) this week, he’s been playing amazing, helping me to get through a couple of tight ones.”

Stewart, who had lost in his singles semi-final earlier in the day, added: “It’s been a good week. It was a shame in the singles, but it felt really good to come back in the doubles.”

The duo will be looking to continue their form on home soil this week as they once again pair up for the Lexus British Pro Series Glasgow, for which there is free entry all week at Scotstoun.

Lumsden reaches semis at Guangzhou Open

On the WTA Tour, Maia Lumsden enjoyed a run to the semi-finals at the Guangzhou Open, where she teamed up with Isabelle Haverlag.

The second seeds cruised through the first two rounds without dropping a set, but came up just short in the final four against Eudice Chong and En Shuo Liang.
