Gordon Reid prepares for US Open with singles title in Maryland

• 3 MINUTE READ

Gordon Reid completed the perfect warm-up for the final Grand Slam of the year as he claimed his first singles title for two-and-a-half years.

Reid extended his unbeaten career record against Takuya Miki of Japan to 22 matches to win the JTCC Wheelchair Championships in College Park in Maryland.

After beating Conner Stroud (USA) 6-2, 6-4 in his opening encounter, Reid then beat fourth seed Zhenxu Ji from China 6-4, 7-6 (4) to set up the final with Miki.

And he rounded off his week without dropping a set as he beat Miki 6-4, 7-6 (5) to head into the US Open in confident mood.

As usual, Reid will be teaming up with partner Alfie Hewett in the men’s doubles in New York while also competing in the men’s singles.

“Thanks to the team at the JTCC Wheelchair Championships for running a top event,” Reid wrote on Instagram following the final. “Onwards to New York City.”

Stewart impresses before watching Nadal

Hamish Stewart racked up some impressive wins at the Manacor Challenger held at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain.

Stewart qualified for the main draw with comfortable victories over Lucas Poullain and Antoine Escoffier before being drawn against the top seed Otto Virtanen.

And the Scot found his top form to secure his best-ever win by ranking, taking out the world number 123 with a straight-sets 6-3, 6-3 win.

In front of the watching Rafa Nadal himself, Stewart started well in the next round, taking the first set against Daniel Rincon, however was edged out 6-2, 3-6, 5-7 following a hard-fought encounter.

Norrie & Fearnley progress at US Open

Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley both made progress at the US Open, only falling to two of the favourites for the competition.

Norrie reached the third round after a retirement from Sebastian Korda when the Scot held a two-set lead, and a dramatic four-set win over Francisco Comesana.

Under the lights of an Arthur Ashe night session, however, Norrie fell short against the 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic over four sets 4-6, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 3-6.

Fearnley, meanwhile, came through the first round of his first-ever US Open in impressive fashion, beating the veteran Roberto Bautista-Agut 7-5, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to set up his third clash of the year with third seed Alexander Zverev.

The young Scot produced an impressive performance, but it was Zverev who progressed with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win.
