Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week - Pat Reid

Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week 2020 could not pass without recognition of Pat Reid MBE, a woman who has achieved it all across a 50-year involvement within sport.

Starting out as a child playing tennis with her mother in a public park, Pat has since become a pillar of the Scottish sporting community. Over an illustrious career, she has received recognition for coaching, refereeing and fundraising efforts which led her towards becoming President of the Tennis Scotland board amongst various other prestigious roles.

Early Career

Pat began her involvement as a player at Dunfermline Tennis Club in the early 60s before joining the committee which she has now been part of since 1969. Across a distinguished period, she has made her mark in various roles including Match Secretary and President before assuming her current position as Secretary and Treasurer. Through her connection with the club, Pat also became involved with Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council, twice serving as the Chair, a role she currently holds. She is also a Director of Scottish Lawn Tennis Foundation.

As a qualified coach and referee, Pat organised the club’s coaching programme in the 1990s, inspiring many juniors through her Saturday morning sessions. She also officiated the Dunfermline Junior Open, Junior East Championships and Junior Scottish Championships for several years.

As part of her role at Dunfermline, she twice represented the club on the East of Scotland committee and acted as president between 1995-97. Pat also accompanied the East’s junior and senior squads to county events for over a decade.

Twenty Year Tenure

Her 20-year tenure as a Director of Tennis Scotland, and stint as President in 2003-2005, coincided with the surfacing of many of the nation’s most celebrated players, including Colin Fleming, Gordon Reid and of course Jamie and Andy Murray; who Pat fondly remembers as juniors who developed their passion for tennis at Dunfermline’s courts whilst mum Judy was a club member.

In 2015, Pat was recognised for her “outstanding service” to the sport when she was presented with Tennis Scotland’s prestigious Honorary Vice Presidents’ Award. This was later followed up by an MBE for services to tennis and lacrosse, receiving recognition in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List.
