Chair Vacancy

Due to business commitments and after five years on the Board of Tennis Scotland, two as a Non Executive Director and three as Chair, current Chairman, Scott Martin, has decided not to seek a further term in the role due to work commitments. Therefore, he will vacate the position in December at the end of his term, and Tennis Scotland is now seeking his replacement.

Similar to the other Tennis Scotland Board positions, the Chair role is non remunerated in nature with a time commitment of up to six Board meetings per year, as well as involvement in Board Sub Committees or Executive Working Groups as appropriate i.e. approx.1/2days per month.

The Board of Tennis Scotland has a critical role to play to support the organisation in the fulfilment of its Vision of “tennis opened up to deliver the legacy” and Mission “to grow tennis by making it relevant, accessible, welcoming and enjoyable” with specific strategic objectives as follows :

  • To build stronger venues at the heart of our community making tennis accessible
  • To build a world class player development pathway
  • To develop a range of facilities and venues fit for the future of our sport making tennis relevant
  • To deliver a range of events and competitions to experience and showcase tennis making tennis enjoyable and welcoming
  • To grow and develop a world class workforce
  • To grow and develop resources to enable an effective organisation

The above strategic objectives together with sound partnership working with the LTA and sportscotland over the last two years has helped to deliver significant resources both in capital and revenue so that the above plans can be actioned and delivered. Therefore this is an ideal opportunity for an individual who shares this vision and is motivated to play a part in its delivery.

The Chair role is for a period of three years and has the following main elements:

  • Provide Board leadership to Tennis Scotland, ensuring the ongoing support of its key partners in the LTA and sportsscotland
  • Support the CEO as required on an ongoing basis
  • Chair all Board meetings, agreeing the agenda for these with the CEO
  • Ensure that the Tennis Scotland meets the highest standard of Board governance
  • Performance monitoring of the organisation against strategy
  • Ensure that the Board and its sub committees are properly resourced with appropriate members that can add value to them

Tennis Scotland is interested in potential applicants with a broad range of sporting, business and/or professional experience in leadership positions, with specific requirements being :

  • A positive track record at Board level across different organisations, ideally in the Chair role
  • A keen interest in sport, ideally tennis, with experience of governance in sporting organisations being desirable
  • Strong leadership qualities, including effective communication skills, to ensure the high performance of the Board
  • The ability to develop and maintain relationships with the key partners of Tennis Scotland
  • Experience of creating an effective performance management culture for the delivery of strategy

In addition, the person will have sufficient time flexibility to properly execute the requirements of the role.
