Tribute to former GB Davis Cup Captain Bill Knight

• 1 minute read

The LTA family is saddened to hear that former Great Britain Davis Cup player and Captain Bill Knight has passed away at the age of 90.

Bill played 43 matches for the Great Britain Davis Cup team throughout his career, winning 27 of them and forming part of the team that reached the semi-finals in 1963.

He later took on a coaching role at the LTA and was Davis Cup Captain for two ties between 1994 and 1995.

Bill was one of the finest British players of the 1950s and early 1960s. He played at Wimbledon every year between 1952 and 1966, winning the boys’ singles title in 1953 and subsequently reaching the fourth round of the men’s singles on four occasions, in 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1964.

In addition, he twice reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles, alongside Shirley Bloomer in 1958 and Yola Ramirez in 1959, when they were the top seeds.

Bill’s best Grand Slam singles performance came at Roland Garros in 1959, where he reached the quarter-finals before losing to the eventual champion, Nicola Pietrangeli. He also won the mixed doubles title, partnering Ramirez.

As well as his four last 16 appearances at Wimbledon, he reached the fourth round of the US Championships in 1958 and 1962.

In Australia he failed to get past the second round, although he did win the Junior title in 1954, defeating Roy Emerson in the final. Three years later he was runner-up in the mixed doubles, alongside Jill Langley.

Outside of the Grand Slams, Bill won several important titles, including the British Hard Court Championships in 1958, 1963 and 1964, the British Covered Court Championships in 1960 and the German International Championships in 1959.

Jeremy Bates, who played under Bill in the Great Britain Davis Cup team, said: “Bill was a really committed and charismatic leader, he had a special way of being tough and very motivational at the same time.

"Nobody cared more about the players and British tennis in general, I’ll always be very grateful for all the help and support he gave me."

Everyone at the LTA sends our condolences to Bill's friends and family.
