National Bank Open 2025: Emma Raducanu to face Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova in third round
• 2 MINUTE READ
British No.1 Emma Raducanu will face Wimbledon runner-up and world No.7 Amanda Anisimova in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal.
The former US Open champion knocked out 32nd seed Peyton Stearns 6-2, 6-4 in the second round – backing up an opening round victory against Elena Gabriela Ruse.
Raducanu continues her impressive form during the North American hard-court swing, having reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 in Washington last week, with wins over Marta Kostyuk, Naomi Osaka and Maria Sakkari.
Following her third career win over American Stearns, Raducanu said: “I know Peyton is a really tough opponent, we've played two times in the past and always had really long matches. I'm really happy with how I came through in that match.
"I kind of lost my focus at some moments in the second set and she took advantage, but very happy that I came through against a top opponent and happy to extend my stay in Montreal.”
It was a dominant performance from the 22-year-old who dropped just four points on serve to clinch the first set in 42 minutes on her sixth set point.
Stearns rallied back in the second set and raced out to a 4-2 lead, but Raducanu showed her quality to provide the perfect response. The Briton went on to reel off the final four games in a row to book her place in the third round.
There she will meet Anisimova, who defeated New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-6(5) in the second round.
Raducanu and Anisimova have faced each other twice this year, with the British star winning in straight sets at the Australian Open and Miami Open.
However, since then, the 23-year-old American has gone on to reach her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon as well as finishing runner-up at the HSBC Championships.
Raducanu is the last Briton in singles action at the National Bank Open after Cam Norrie lost to Aleksandar Vukic 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3.
