Katie Boulter progresses to the quarter-finals at the Merida Open

• 1 minute read

Katie Boulter’s unbeaten continued at the WTA 500 Merida Open as world No.61 Camila Osorio retired in the second set of their second round clash.

Boulter took the opening set 6-3 before the Colombian called for the trainer and eventually retired from the match – taking the British star through to the quarter-finals.

The 29-year-old Brit is now undefeated in seven matches after lifting her fourth career WTA title in Ostrava earlier this month.

In the quarter-final, she will face either two-time Grand Slam finalist and top seed Jasmine Paolini or Australia’s Priscilla Hon.

After the match, Boulter was keen to send her best wishes to her opponent. “"Obviously we really don't want to see women with injuries, it's been pretty tough recently. I've seen a lot of people with them and I've been through them myself so I know how difficult it is.

"It's really not fun so I wish her the very best and I hope to see her next week in Indian Wells and hopefully it's something small.

“I really love playing in front of a lot of people so it's really nice to have everyone out here supporting the tournament. I'm just happy to be out here and playing more matches."

Boulter began her campaign in Merida with a gritty 6-4, 6-4 win over former world No.10 Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round.

Coming into the second round, Boulter would have been hoping to build on her previous performance and make some improvements on serve, but found herself down an early break against the Colombian.

The former British No.1 came back firing and won the following four straight games and saved all four break points to eventually see out the set.

Osorio called for the physio at the change of ends at the end of the set before making the decision to call an end to the match.

Elsewhere, Jack Draper lost out in the second round at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
