Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool have become the first all-British doubles team to be crowned year-end ATP doubles No.1 after sealing their first victory at the Nitto ATP Finals.
It's been an outstanding year for the all-British duo. In their first full season as a team, Cash and Glasspool have captured seven ATP titles - including a maiden Grand Slam title - and climbed to the top of the world rankings for the first time, capping it all off by becoming year-end doubles world No.1s.
In an on-court trophy presentation for the British duo following their win over Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in their second round-robin match, Cash said, “It's been one crazy year, that's for sure. We put an awful lot of work in in the offseason. (We) couldn't have done it without everyone there in the box, also my family up there in the corner.
Meanwhile, Glasspool added, “We wouldn’t be here without our box and our team - They've supported us for many, many years.”
"It's been an incredible year, credit to ourselves as well, I think we've worked very hard and we've pushed each other massively. We've put in a massive shift this year along with our team and it wouldn't be possible without both of us working really hard.”
It takes a lot of people to get to this spot. We've ticked off so many things this year and I think we both truly believed at the start of the year that this was possible for us and to be standing here now is very surreal.
Cash and Glasspool kick-started their season by lifting the trophy in Brisbane before sealing the silverware in Doha the following month.
However it wasn’t until the British grass court season where the pair began their dominant surge on the ATP doubles tour. After reaching the final in s’Hertogenbosch, the Brits went on a 22 match unbeaten streak, claiming consecutive titles at the HSBC Championships, Lexus Eastbourne Open, Wimbledon and National Bank Open.
In lifting the historic title at the All England Club, Cash and Glasspool became the first all-British doubles pair to claim a Grand Slam men’s doubles title in the Open Era.
They were the first pair to qualify for the year-end championships in Turin, and will now turn their focus to their final group stage match on Thursday where they take on reigning Roland Garros and US Open champions Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in a bid to qualify for the semi-finals.
