Cam Norrie makes Metz final as Aidan McHugh & Toby Samuel lead British title winners

The latest news, results and title winners from the world of British tennis - including an ATP final and five ITF titles.

Norrie finishes as runner-up in Metz

Cam Norrie came within touching distance of adding a sixth career ATP title at the Moselle Open in Metz but eventually finished runner-up for the second year in a row.

British No.2 Norrie knocked out home favourites Valentin Royer, Arthur Cazaux and Kyrian Jacquet, before defeating Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the semi-finals to return to the Metz final.

Norrie had won all of his first four matches in three sets, but came undone in the final USA’s Learner Tien 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6).

The 30-year-old came back from a break down in the third set and led 5-1 in the tie-break before the American produced an impressive surge to win six of the last seven points.

Norrie looks set to finish the season as the world No.27 following an impressive second half of the season which included a quarter-final at Wimbledon, third rounds at ATP Masters 1000s in Shanghai and Paris, as well as the final in Metz.

Elsewhere, Ryan Peniston reached the semi-final of the ATP Challenger in Matsuyama before losing out to Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro 6-3, 6-2.

Peniston – the current world No.197 – is one of nine players in the ATP top 200, with 14 in the top 250.

McHugh & Samuel claim ITF titles

There British singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour last week, with Aidan McHugh and Toby Samuel leading the British charge in the USA and Egypt.

25-year-old McHugh won his first singles trophy in two years at the M25 East Lansing after reaching his second final in as many weeks.

After a three set come back win over Shu Matsuoka in the first round, McHugh didn’t drop a set the rest of the way to claim an eighth career singles title.

In the final, he beat Erik Arutiunian 7-5, 6-3 to complete a standout week in the States.

Meanwhile, Samuel added his third title of the season at the M15 Sharm El Sheikh to continue his strong run of form at ITF level.

The British star defeated Michael Krajci of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4 in the final. This was Samuel’s fifth straight final on the ITF Tour dating back to August.

Millen Hurrion also made the final of the M15 Heraklion but finished runner-up to Ioannis Xilas 6-4, 6-4.

British quartet seal doubles titles

In doubles, Ben Jones combined with David Poljak to lift the title at the M25 Montreal – their second of the season as a team.

Jones and Poljak won three matches in deciding match tie-breaks, including a 7-6(6), 4-6, 10-6 win over Duncan Chan and Daniel Milavsky in the final.

Jones has been a force on the ITF Tour this season – his trophy in Montreal is his ninth of the year so far.

British duo Finn Murgett and Marcus Walters were victorious at the M15 Heraklion, winning the title without dropping a set.

They beat American team Alex Jones and Miles Jones 6-2, 6-2 in a convincing final win.

Finally, William Nolan added his name to the list of British title winners this week alongside Max Exsted at the M15 Orlando.

Nolan and Exsted beat Ryan Colby and Noah Zamora 6-4, 7-6(4) in the final to seal Nolan’s second career title.
