British tennis star Sonay Kartal gets her post-Wimbledon tattoo
• 1 MINUTE READ
As 23-year-old Sonay Kartal stepped out onto Wimbledon’s Centre Court for the first time for her maiden appearance in a Grand Slam fourth round, the British tennis star was greeted with a big clap of thunder.
This served as the inspiration for Kartal’s latest tattoo – something she had been questioned about numerous times throughout her career-best run at The Championships this summer.
Set to rise to British No.2 on Monday, Kartal has had a whirlwind couple of weeks, starting with a win over 20th seed and former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko, before beating Viktoriya Tomova and Diane Parry to reach the round of 16. It rounds off an incredible 12 months, in which she’s jumped from world No.298 in the rankings to a career-high inside the top 50.
After her defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kartal told the media that she would be going to get another tattoo to add to her collection in recognition of this year’s tournament.
We joined the Brighton-native at her local tattoo parlour to chat all things Wimbledon, her love for tattoos and to choose the design for her latest additions to commemorate her summer run and her Billie Jean King Cup debut earlier this year.
