Jamie Murray and John-Patrick Smith fell at the final hurdle at the inaugural Murray Trophy – Glasgow, suffering defeat at the hands of Ruben Bemelmans and Daniel Masur in Sunday’s final of the ATP Challenger tournament.

Despite winning the first set with a late break of serve, Murray and Smith lost 4-6, 6-3, [10-8] after a topsy-turvy match ended with Bemelmans and Masur holding their nerve in the deciding set tie-break.

Murray said: “It’s disappointing to lose. We played a good first set then lost our way a little bit in the second set. We managed to fight back to 8-8 in the tie-break then we just lost the last couple of points.

“It was a great week for the event. A lot of people seemed to come out and enjoy being a part of it.”

Emil Ruusuvuori clinched the singles title at the Murray Trophy with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alexandre Muller. The Finn produced another quality performance to seal his third Challenger crown of the year.

He said: “I thought I played a great match. I didn’t start that well, but I was able to raise my level. I got the break in the first set then I managed to loosen up a little in the second set. It was good.

“It’s not easy to break here. It just shows I’m able to play some pretty great tennis at the moment and do some damage to the other guys. It’s been a great week.”
