Murray and Soares edge British battle in Paris

• 2 MINUTE READ

Jamie Murray and his Brazilian partner Bruno Soares were forced to work hard to overcome British duo Dom Inglot and Luke Bambridge 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3 in the opening round of the 2021 French Open.

The number seven seeds, who reached the quarter-finals of the French event in 2017, found the going tough against Inglot and Bambridge and there was little to separate the two sides in the first round of the men’s doubles.

After exchanging a pair of breaks each in the opening set, Murray and Soares soared to a 6-3 lead in the tie-break before claiming the opener with their third set point.

The second set was also a tight affair and during a second tie-break it was ultimately a Murray double fault that handed the second set to Inglot and Bambridge.

That minor blip didn’t faze the experienced pairing of Murray and Soares, though, with the two-time Grand Slam-winning duo breaking late in the final set to seal victory and advance to the second round.

Also in action today were British brothers Neal and Ken Skupski, who were beaten 6-4, 6-4 in a hard fought match against the Colombian second seeds Robert Farah and Juan Sebastián Cabal.
