Silva, Moore and Grey qualify for the main draw

Eden Silva, Tara Moore and Sarah Beth Grey are all through to the main draw at the Viking Open Nottingham after picking up victories on day one.

Having been called up to qualifying today, Silva took full advantage of the opportunity and caused the upset of the day, defeating fellow Brit Samantha Murray Sharan, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

After an early exchange in breaks of serve, the first set was evenly poised. At 3-3 on Silva’s serve, they played six deuce points, before the 25-year-old managed to clinch the lead. They eventually went to a tie break, where Silva won every point on serve to seal a one set lead.

Full of confidence, she took an early lead in the second, breaking in the first game and marching on to complete her victory.

Meanwhile, Tara Moore produced a fantastic comeback to overcome a one set deficit against Italy’s Martina Di Giuseppe 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2

Di Giuseppe raced out to a one set lead and looked to have the match all but won, after breaking to go 5-4 ahead in the second. Moore however had other ideas.

The Brit forced the Italian to a tie break, which she edged 9-7 and from there she was able to take control. An early break in the third all be secured Moore’s place in the main draw.

Grey completed a trio of Brits to make it through qualifying after beating Emily Webley-Smith 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

Despite being broken in the opening game, Grey soon settled in to the match, winning five games on the bounce and taking a one set lead. Webley-Smith however, is a tough competitor and bounced back from 5-4 down to level up the scores at one set apiece.

With the match in the balance, Webley-Smith dealt the first blow in the deciding set, speeding off to a 4-1 lead and then serving for the match at 5-3. It was time for Grey to pull out all the stops and that she did. She won the next four games in a row and with that, booked her place in the draw.

In the first match of the day on Court 1, Britain’s Naiktha Bains bowed out to Dutch star Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove. The fourth seed in qualifying won the match 6-2, 6-4 to progress to the main draw.

Completing the final list of qualifiers for this year’s Viking Open Nottingham are Kateryna Kozlova, Coco Vandeweghe, Katie Volynets and Ankita Raina.
