Sir Andy Murray returned to The Queen’s Club for the unveiling of the ‘Andy Murray Arena’ - kick-starting a fortnight of women’s and men’s tennis at the 2025 HSBC Championships.
To commemorate the legacy Murray left at the tournament, the decision to re-name centre court at the historic venue in West London was made following the Brit’s retirement last summer.
Murray is a five-time singles champion at the tournament and also lifted the doubles title alongside Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in 2019.
The three-time Grand Slam champion returned to Queen's for a special opening ceremony on the first day of the new WTA 500 event at the HSBC Championships. It’s the first time in 52 years that a women’s event has been held in London.

- 2011: Beat Jo-Wilfred Tsonga (FRA) 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4
- 2013: Beat Marin Cilic (CRO) 5-7, 7-5, 6-3
- 2015: Beat Kevin Anderson (RSA) 6-3, 6-4
- 2016: Beat Milos Raonic (CAN) 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3
The official opening of the Andy Murray Arena began with a video montage of the Brit’s most memorable moments at the tournament since making his debut at the Queen's Club in 2005.
From there, the ball kids came together to create a guard of honour for the two-time Wimbledom champion as he stepped onto the court for the first time in a year where he played the final singles match of his career against Australia’s Jordan Thompson.
Speaking on how it feels to be back at the venue which holds many memories for the Brit, Murray said, “It’s great. I've obviously missed being out here. First time not being involved in a grass court season in a while, but I’ve got a new life now and enjoying being away from the sport.”
“It’s cool, this tournament and this court has had many special moments for me. It’s the place, the tournament not the court, where I won my first match on the ATP Tour,
“It was my most successful event; I always love coming back here at the start of the British summer. I’m very proud of the results I had here. I’m very grateful and thankful for whoever it was who decided to name the stadium this was.”
Murray was then joined on court by former British tennis player and Tournament Director of the HSBC Championships WTA event, Laura Robson, 10-year-old Gloria Pearce from the Queen’s Club Foundation and seven-year-old Jay Ikanone from Greenhouse Sport to enjoy a hit.
Before picking up his racket, Murray joked with the crowd, saying, “My tennis is diabolical nowadays so apologies for what you’re about to witness but I’ll give it a go”.
However, as we’ve seen plenty of times over the years at this tournament, the former world No.1 ended up winning both points with his partner Gloria.
The 38-year-old then had the honour of doing the coin toss for the highly-anticipated first match of the WTA 500 event between two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia to wrap up the unveiling of his arena.
