Britain’s Oliver Bonding is the new Lexus British Open Roehampton boys’ singles champion after an impressive week at the Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre.
Bonding became the fourth British player to win the boys’ singles title after defeating Bulgarian ninth seed Alexander Vasilev 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
He joins James Marsalek (2010), Liam Broady (2011) and Jack Pinnington Jones (2021) as the latest British champion at the J300 junior ITF event.
The Briton had an excellent run to the final knocking out 14th seed Pierluigi Basile of Italy and fourth seed Ivan Ivanov of Bulgaria in the quarter and semi-finals.
“It’s incredibly special,” Bonding said on winning the title. “A lot of my friends came to watch, and I train here at the National Tennis Centre. To be next to basically where I live is a massive privilege.
“I think I’ve been improving a lot the last few months and that’s starting to show, which I’m really happy about.”
Bonding is the reigning 18U Lexus Junior National Championships title-winner – taking home the trophy in 2024 and 2025 – and has previously won the Banana Bowl, one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the international calendar.
The 18-year-old from Surrey is now set to turn his attention to the junior events at Wimbledon where he will be bidding to get his first career win.
Bonding has made the semi-finals of the doubles in both junior Australian Open and Roland Garros this year.
“We don’t play on grass that much and I think a lot of the players are struggling to get used to it,” he added. “I’ve had a lot of practice and a lot of matches which is the best preparation going into Wimbledon.
“I can take a lot of confidence, especially for next week at Junior Wimbledon – knowing that my level is right there. I got a lot of confidence also from Wimbledon qualifying and winning around there.”
However, in the boys’ doubles, Brits Ben Gusic Wan and Conor Brady lost 6-3, 6-4 in the final against Timofei Derepasko and Jacapo Vasami.
In the girls’ singles, USA’s Julieta Pareja came back to defeat Elizara Yaneva 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
She follows in the footsteps of the likes of Coco Gauff as the sixth American to win the title.
