Neal Skupski’s Olympics Diary
26 July 2021
In this exclusive blog written by Neal Skupski for Advantage, the British player gives an insight into life as an athlete representing Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
It’s been incredible to be out here – and we settled into life in the village straight away.
Pretty much all of the British players are staying together in an apartment – me, Jamie [Murray], Andy [Murray], Joe [Salisbury] and Heather [Watson] are all together. Liam [Broady] arrived late so he’s with the gymnasts! We had a good look around the village on the first day and it’s great. There’s an amazing restaurant with all different cuisines from all around the world. We went there on the first night and it was nice to see all the athletes from all around the world together.
The tennis site is very nice too.
It’s got lots of great practice facilities – and courts to play on – and it’s been a great host of the tennis competition. Great Britain also have a Performance Lodge, which has been awesome too. We can go there and have breakfast, lunch and dinner and there’s a great gym and pool and ice bath for recovery. It’s a great space for us to get to know the other Team GB athletes and it’s somewhere to relax when we’re not training or playing – much better than being sat in your apartment watching Japanese TV! It’s a really nice thing we’ve got going on here.
We’ve managed to have a go at a few other sports in the GB Lodge.
I’ve been getting quite into table tennis with one of the GB table tennis players, and Jamie has been getting a few boxing lessons in too – and it’s nice to learn about other sports and get away from tennis for a little bit. We also went to watch the GB judo team train as well and I have to say I’d never want to get on the mat – it looked pretty intense and they were really throwing each other around! It’s been special getting to know other sports and see what other athletes go through, and how they prepare for their events too.
I’m trying to take as many pictures as possible to savour each moment – but it’s just gone so quickly!
I’m just trying to speak to as many athletes as possible to get their take on the Games and hear all about their experiences. One thing we are all trying to do at the moment is go out and exchange pins with other athletes. Yep, you read that right all the athletes are given about 12 or 15 pins at every Olympics with their country’s flag and we are competing to see who can get the best selection. I managed to nab a Micronesia pin – I think that’s one of the rarest out there – so managing to get that has done wonders for me in the competition to get the best collection of pins. Andy, being Andy Murray, is doing very well at getting pins but we’re all trying to keep up with him (he’s on his fourth Olympics though so he’s going to take quite some catching).
Shortly before I got to Tokyo I won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon with Desirae Krawczyk – it was an unbelievable feeling and I haven’t been able to soak it all in yet.
We won on the Sunday evening then I went back to Liverpool for a couple of days but after that I was back doing some training at the National Tennis Centre before I flew out to Tokyo. It was an amazing two weeks with Desirae – it was a shame me and my brother Ken couldn’t go a bit further in the men’s doubles – but it is something I will really celebrate once I get the time to. It’s an incredible achievement to win Wimbledon. One of your goals starting out is just to be at Wimbledon, so to actually win one of the events there is an unbelievable feeling. Hopefully it’s not going to be my only win there and there’s a few more wins to come there in the future.
Ken and I know each other like the back of our hands having grown up together – and we’ve had a good year together so far.
Ken gave me a stepping stone into the pros – he was top 100 in the world while I was just starting out and was around 900th in the world rankings when we started playing together. He was there for me from the beginning so it was a really nice feeling to start playing with one another again. Winning in Acapulco was great but also when he had to take some time off I really enjoyed playing with Evo as well in Monte Carlo and Miami making the finals there. Ken and I still have a lot planned for this year and we’ve got the US swing coming up, including the US Open, so it’ll be great to play another Grand Slam together.
Before we teamed up in Tokyo, Jamie and I played with one another for 18 months so it was great to play with someone you know well, rather than someone new.
We knew all of our tactics coming into the tournament and we worked on a few things to refine our game before the event started. We gave it our all representing Great Britain and it was an amazing experience.
