Winter in Britain. Lots of rain. Plenty of wind. Some snow. But, it’s also a great time to play tennis.

If you wrap up warm, have the right tennis equipment and adapt your game accordingly winter tennis can be some of the most enjoyable of the year.

Most importantly it’s key to stay safe. Make sure to follow these top tips from the LTA’s Chief Medical Officer Jo Larkin, and her team, before going out on court.

1.Wear the right clothing

Good footwear is essential for tennis in all weather, especially in wet conditions. You should make sure you have good grip on your shoes and they should be worn in. During the colder months appropriate clothing is essential to manage the lower temperatures – wear layers that are warm but breathable, and can be added or removed during play.

2. Prepare equipment and personnel

Tennis balls, rackets and other equipment can easily become wet and make play more challenging. Ensure rackets have good grip and consider bringing spares. Keep courts clear of hazards like leaves and puddles, too.

3. Warm Up

Warming up is key all-year round – but is even more significant in the winter. Warming up prepares the body for exercise and reduces the chance of injury. It’s essential, so don’t skip this step.

4. Take a common sense approach

When it comes to playing in bad weather, be sensible. If you think there is a chance the weather might be too dangerous to play in, or you have been advised against going out by the Met Office or local weather forecast, then please consider this in advance. If you fail to do so you could risk inuring or causing yourself serious harm. Always check the forecast before heading out on court, and avoid playing if there's lightning around.

5. Follow the current Covid-19 guidance

The regulation for Covid-19 change frequently and it is important to stay up to date with what you can and can’t do in your area. Check the current guidelines in your area before you play and ensure you follow the guidelines to keep you, and others, safe and well.
