Welsh National Championships 2020 Cancelled due to Covid-19

• 2 MINUTE READ

In response to today’s announcement from the LTA regarding the decision to cancel all LTA competitions (Grade 1-5) up to Monday 31st August and as a result of our own prior consultation with host venues, the tournament referee, main sponsor and county committees, this year’s Welsh National Championships due to be held in Penarth from Sunday 23rd to Saturday 29th August has sadly been cancelled.

Instead a number of one-day Grade 6 events across Wales are currently being planned for the week with local referees to run in its place.

Mark Lewis, Competition & Events Manager at Tennis Wales commented “We are hugely disappointed to have to make this decision as we know what the Welsh National Championships means to so many people. We have taken everything into consideration and it was simply not feasible to run a seven day event to the grand scale we want the Championships to be. The announcement from the LTA today further endorses this decision. We would like to express our thanks to Penarth LTC and Windsor LTC, Penarth for their enthusiasm and passion during our initial planning towards jointly-hosting the event this year”.

“We have seen a number of other established week-long Summer competitions sadly cancelled due to the current pandemic including events at Allt Yr Yn, Aberaeron, Prestatyn, Penarth, Swansea, Llanelli and Wrexham. However we are actively working with these venues and others to offer replacement, one-day events in their place to offer competitive opportunities this Summer, albeit on a smaller scale than we would have liked”.

Tennis Wales are working on plans which will see competitive tennis begin in Wales with LTA Box Leagues due to launch mid-July for 10-18 year olds. The team are also working on plans for performance players to be able to compete locally as part of the summer season once we know more about the upcoming changes to the Welsh Government legislation.

The LTA has a dedicated FAQ page in relation to competitions for both officials and players. Anyone with queries relating to Wales specifically should contact Mark Lewis, Competitions & Events Manager.
