Success for Welsh players ahead of the Home Nations Tournament.

• 2 MINUTE READ

The British Open Seniors Tournament held at Wrexham Tennis Centre between the 17th and 27th February saw success for a number of Welsh players.

In the ladies 40 + singles event Claire Powell, the Welsh 35 Captain for the Home Nations Tournament, lost in a very close final 7–5 7-5. On the way to the final she defeated the number 1 seed in straight sets.  There was success for Rhian Griffiths and her partner Debra Schmidt in the ladies 60 doubles and for Ann Brown and Val Alder in the ladies 65 doubles. After a tough semi final, in which Val and Ann lost the first set to love, they battled their way back into the match to win 10 – 8 in the final set tie-break. They won the final in straight sets against the number 1 seeds.

In the men's event there was success for Alistair Alexander who won the men's 60+ singles beating Gary Payton in a tough three set match. This was Alistair’s 4th straight Indoor Championship win following 3 titles in the 55’s. A fantastic record. With partner Mike Harpin, Alistair was again victorious in  the men’s 60+ doubles. Alistair is set to represent GB at the world championships in Florida in May -  we wish him well.  Nick Lee alongside partner Martin Cornish won the men’s 65+ doubles.

Other notable Welsh performances came from Clive Small who reached the semi finals of the over 70s Jo Price, Sue Mitchell and Kevin Hong.

Congratulations to all those who took part.

The Home Nations Tournaments are due to take place over the early May Bank Holiday. The 35+,45+ and 50+ age group events will be held in Wrexham and the 55+, 60+, and 65+ age group events will be in Bolton.
