• 5 MINUTE READ
More than 200 top Welsh tennis players from across the nation competed at Bridgend Tennis & Squash Club last week, battling it out for the title of Cymru National Champion.
Players in junior, wheelchair, visually impaired, and open categories competed across both singles and doubles events in an action-packed week of tennis where the standard of tennis was outstanding, with many of Wales’ very best players showcasing their talent on Bridgend’s clay and hard courts.
The atmosphere throughout the week was brilliant, with families, friends, and local club members creating a lively environment. Finals drew strong crowds, with spectators passionately backing their players, while many neutrals also enjoyed the high-quality matches on display.
The week was a superb showcase of talent in Wales and welcomed some standout performances.
Madeleine Green had a remarkable week, winning the U16 Girls’ Singles, U18 Girls’ Singles, U18 Girls’ Doubles, and U18 Mixed Doubles. Amnah Salim reached the finals of the U12 & U14 Girls’ Singles & Girls’ Doubles, winning 3 out of the 4 (U12 & U14 Girls’ Singles & U12 Girls’ Doubles). Kevin Lewis claimed the Men’s Wheelchair Singles for the fifth consecutive year. Freya Walters, Rosie Morgan, Jethro Dela Vega, Adam Travis, and Mckenzie O’Reilly all came into the event as defending singles champions and won singles titles again. The winners of the U11 and U12 Boys’ Singles (Fletcher Davies & Daniel Obaid), teamed up to win the U12 Boys’ Doubles. Mixed Doubles champions, Toby Mclellan & Molly Walsh both also lifted the Men’s and Women’s Doubles titles. Finally, one of the youngest players at the event, Lacie Weston won both the U8 and U9 GS titles.
This year every competitor received a 2025 Championships T-shirt and player pass lanyard, with additional goodies being handed out, this included water bottles, wristbands, grips, and keyrings. In an exciting new addition for 2025, champions not only lifted the traditional trophy but also received an exclusive ‘Cymru National Champion’ T-shirt to mark their achievement.
This year’s event also saw the debut of ‘Spark’, Tennis Wales’ new safeguarding mascot, proving to be a huge hit with players and families, promoting the vital message of player welfare and safety.
Thanks to Bridgend Tennis Club’s excellent facilities including eight courts, a clubhouse, and bubble-covered indoor surfaces the action continued smoothly even when rain interrupted play. Special thanks also go to David Lloyd Cardiff, who kindly hosted the visually impaired events.
