Awards Celebrate Tennis in Cymru

Inspirational individuals, programmes, clubs and venues involved in tennis in Cymru were recognised at a glittering ceremony at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff on 29 February.

 

Tennis Wales Awards 2024 Group ShotThe event, hosted by Simon Clarke of Speakeasy Club, celebrated their hard work, achievements and successes that has helped ensure that tennis can be accessed, played and enjoyed by anyone in Wales wishing to take part – and has shone the spotlight on Welsh tennis.  

The winners were:

  • Chiltern Sports Club of the Year*: Neath Community Tennis Courts 
  • Dragon Signs Development Coach of the Year*: Ellie Lewis 
  • Performance Coach on the Year*:  Francesca Lewis 
  • Player of the Year: Mimi Xu 
  • Junior Player of the Year: Niall Pickerd-Barua 
  • Floodlighting and Electrical Services Connecting Communities Award*: EYST 
  • Tennis for All Award*: HMP & YOI Parc 
  • Competition of the Year*: David Lloyd Cardiff Grade 3 Mini’s 
  • Park of the Year*: Six Bells Tennis 
  • Volunteer of the Year*:  Linda Sawyer, Wrexham 
  • Rising Star of the Year*: Cameron Parry, Wrexham 
  • Team of the Year: South Wales Over 35 Men’s Team 
  • Club Team of the Year: Mold Men’s A Team 
  • Official of the Year*: Ian Preston 
  • School of the Year*: Cardinal Newman School 
  • University of the Year: Cardiff Metropolitan University 
  • Lifetime Achievement*: Glyn Walters, Garw Valley 
  • President’s Award*: Chris Hill, Six Bells. 

A fantastic evening also saw guest speaker Stephanie Hilborne, CEO of Women in Sport, give an insightful talk.

In addition, there was recognition of LTA Level-1 Assistant Coaches who completed their training via the LTA SERVES programme – while those who attended the ceremony helped to raise funds for the events chosen charity LATCH (Children’s in Wales Cancer Charity).    

Maria Rees, Operations Manager said “The Tennis Wales Awards are a great way to recognise the incredible contributions of our Welsh tennis community. Each year we are blown away by the quality of nominations and each year the decisions of the shortlisting panel get more and more difficult”.
