Lumsden wins in Monastir as Fearnley & Norrie meet at Roland Garros

• 4 MINUTE READ

Ewen Lumsden picked up his first pro title of the year after another strong week on the ITF World Tennis Tour – as fellow Scot Matt Rankin also made the final.

After reaching the finals of singles and doubles last week, Lumsden took an extra step in the latter, claiming the M15 Monastir title alongside partner Pedro Araujo.

Going into the event as top seeds, the Scots-Portuguese pairing went through the draw without dropping a set, including a semi-finals win over fourth seeds Yurii Dzhavakian and Nazim Makhlouf.

And they lifted the title without having to lift their rackets, when Rankin and partner Jack Loutit were forced to withdraw.

Both Scots also enjoyed a decent run in the singles, with Rankin reaching the quarter-finals and Lumsden going one stage further, losing out in the last four to Mert Alkaya.

Fearnley enjoys French Open debut

Jacob Fearnley impressed on his French Open debut, putting together a run to the third round in Paris.

After beating former champion Stan Wawrinka in the opening round, Fearnley then progressed into the last 32 when home favourite Ugo Humbert retired in the second set, with the Scot having won the opener.

It was then a clash of the Scots in round three as Fearnley and Cam Norrie went head-to-head for the first time. Norrie had come through one of the ties of the first week, beating Danill Medvedev in five sets before overcoming lucky loser Federico Agustin Gomez.

And it was the more experienced of the two who came out on top, with Norrie enjoying a 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 win to set up a Roland Garros meeting with Novak Djokovic.

Edinburgh hosts top juniors

There was lots of great tennis on show as Tennis Scotland delivered an ITF junior event in Edinburgh.

Held at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, young players gathered from around the world to compete in the J60 Lexus Junior International Edinburgh.

Filip Hesser from Sweden was the boys’ singles champion, while the doubles title went to British duo Liam Channon and William Moxon.

In the girls’ event, Sophia Christodoulou from Great Britain was champion in singles and doubles, where she partnered Georgiana Mititelu.

Juniors impress on grass

Congratulations to young Cameron Rae, who was runner-up in the boys’ doubles at the 12U Lexus Grass Court Championships.

Cameron teamed up with Seb Beetlestone to reach the final without dropping a set during an impressive run.

Another big well done goes to Dominik Czopek, who was winner of the singles consolation at the 14U event.
