Jack Pinnington Jones seals first top 20 win over Flavio Cobolli in Dallas

• 1 minute read

Britain’s Jack Pinnington Jones secured the biggest win of his career so far in defeating world No.20 Flavio Cobolli in the Dallas Open.

Playing in his first ATP 500 event  after coming through qualifying, Pinnington Jones upset the fourth seed 6-2, 6-2 to claim his first top 20 win of his career.

It’s a significant milestone for the 22-year-old, who went full time on the professional tour last summer.

The British star lost just six points behind his serve and broke the Italian four times to wrap up the win in just 54 minutes.

After his convincing victory over two-time ATP title-winner and Wimbledon quarter-finalist Cobolli, Pinnington Jones is set to face either James Duckworth or Eliot Spizzirri.

Pinnington Jones is one of a cohort of British players to have come through the US collegiate system, supported by the LTA NCAA Support Programme.

He attended Texas Christian University (TCU) following in the path of Cam Norrie and also competing in the same team as Jacob Fearnley, where they won a national title together.

Since then, the British star has risen through the ranks on the ATP Challenger Tour. After reaching the final of the Lexus Ilkley Open last summer, Pinnington Jones went on to win his first career Challenger title at the Lexus Nottingham Challenger.

The British star also made his Wimbledon debut – defeating Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry for his first Grand Slam main draw victory.

The Briton has already reached a Challenger final in Soma Bay this year and is currently ranked world No.181 – with a potential new career-high ranking on the cards after this week.

Pinnington Jones is now supported by the Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus - the highest level of support provided by the LTA to players aged 16-24 with the potential to reach the top 100.

You can watch Jack Pinnington Jones in the Dallas Open live on Sky Sports Tennis and NOW TV.
