Emma Raducanu fires into Transylvania Open semi-final
• 2 minute read
Emma Raducanu has fired her way into the semi-finals of the Transylvania Open with a dominant straight sets win over Maja Chwalinska of Poland.
The British No.1 needed just an hour and 11 minutes to beat the world No.146 6-0, 6-4 to book her place in the final four.
Speaking on court after her victory, Raducanu said, "I'm very happy with my performance today, I think I played a great match from the beginning and I'm really pleased I could get off to that start.
"There's always going to be some moments of adversity that you need to overcome and I did that well in the second set. I'm really proud of how I did that - Maja is a really tricky opponent, she moves incredibly well. She's done a great job this week qualifying and coming all the way here so I'm really pleased to overcome that challenge."
Raducanu will now face Oleksandra Olinykova of Ukraine in the semi-final as she looks to reach her first tour-level final since winning the US Open back in 2021.
It’s the 23-year-old’s fifth career WTA semi-final – US Open (2021), Seoul (2022), Nottingham (2024) and Washington (2025).
Olinykova cased an upset earlier in the day as she took out fourth seed Xinyu Wang 6-4, 6-4.
After a slow start in her second round match against Kaja Juvan – falling behind 5-0 before winning 11 straight games – Raducanu came out the blocks firing in the quarter-finals.
The British star converted on her third break point of the opening game, and went on to hit a punishing backhand return winner to seal the double break just two games later.
The pressure started to tell as Chwalinska hit a double fault to hand over a third break, allowing Raducanu to ease through the opening set unscathed.
Chwalinska showed some fight in the second set, overturning a break deficit at 3-2, but the Pole was unable to cope with the powerful groundstrokes coming off the Raducanu racket.
Another double fault restored Raducanu’s break advantage and this time the former Grand Slam champion made it count. The top seed went on to drop just one point on serve across her final two service games to secure her spot in her first semi-final of the year.
