Cam Norrie loses out to Novak Djokovic in three sets at the Geneva Open semi-final

• 1 MINUTE READ

British No.3 Cam Norrie narrowly lost out to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final of the Geneva Open.

Norrie showed great fight to take a second set tie-break but eventually lost out to former world No.1 Djokovic 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-1 as the Serbian moves on to challenge for his 100th ATP title in the final.

Both players came out playing aggressive tennis from the word go – Norrie particularly looking to get on the front foot as early as possible.

However, it was Djokovic who managed to take the opening break of the match on the first time of asking and saw out an almost flawless set losing just two of 22 points on his serve.

Norrie got off to a quick start in the second set and broke early for a 3-1 lead and had the chance to level the match with set point at 5-3 and then with the opportunity to serve it out a game later.

A tight service game from Norrie saw Djokovic work his way back into the match and force a tie-break where went on to set up match point. This time though it was the Serbian’s time to feel the pressure and a flurry of mistakes, finishing with a wayward wide-angled backhand saw Norrie eventually take the set after an hour and 45 minutes.

Despite Norrie’s fantastic resilience and impressive level in his first ATP semi-final of the season, it was one way traffic for Djokovic in the final set. The 38-year-old lost just one point in the opening three games before going on to complete a double break and see out the victory.

The 30-year-old Briton will leave Geneva full of confidence after strong results against Dominic Stricker, Tomas Mahac and Alexei Popyrin in the main draw this week having come through qualifying.

Norrie will now turn his attention to Roland Garros where he faces world No.11 Daniil Medvedev in the first round.
