British tennis star Cameron Norrie supports efforts to reduce food waste
• 2 MINUTE READ
British men’s singles no.3 Cameron Norrie has supported the LTA’s efforts to reduce food waste at the HSBC Championships.
Norrie met a City Harvest van that was collecting leftover food from The Queen’s Club. City Harvest is a food charity which delivers over 1.3 million meals a month to those facing food poverty, and the LTA donates leftover food from the HSBC Championships for the local community.
In 2024, 1.6 tonnes of food, representing 3,800 meals were donated locally, saving 3.2 tonnes of carbon emissions by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste.
This forms part of the LTA’s sustainability efforts across the summer Grass Court Season, focusing on reducing climate impacts, ensuring efficient use of resources, and supporting and protecting the natural environment.
It’s great that the LTA is able to help the local community by donating leftover food from the HSBC Championships to City Harvest, so that it doesn’t go to waste and can benefit others.
British player Cam Norrie said “It’s great that the LTA is able to help the local community by donating leftover food from the HSBC Championships to City Harvest, so that it doesn’t go to waste and can benefit others.
“Food waste is a big challenge across the country and around the world, but we can all play our part to help protect the environment and have a positive impact.”
Other initiatives in place across the LTA’s summer major events include:
- Using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel to power temporary generators on-site, which results in 90% less emissions than standard fuels
- All tournament fleet vehicles used across the LTA grass court events are hybrid and nearly 50% are fully electric models, thanks to a partnership with Lexus
- Water refill stations for spectators, players and officials to fill their water bottles for free and remove over 220,000 single use plastic bottles, thanks to a partnership with BRITA
- Carbon labelling on menus around sites, identifying low carbon options for fans to make sustainable choices
Working with the catering provider, Absolute Taste, the LTA has ensured that sustainable food operations are in place at their events across the Grass Court Season. This includes:
- Reusable cups – to reduce single use plastic waste
- Local sourcing – food produce maps are available across the events, showing where produce has been sourced form
- Low carbon options – available as part of menus across the events, helping fans make a choice that is good for the environment
Tennis balls used by the players at each event are resold with proceeds from sales going towards the LTA Tennis Foundation.
