Wimbledon 2024: Kartal comes through qualifying to reach SW19

• 2 MINUTE READ

Brighton hotshot Sonay Kartal rose to the occasion and sealed her main draw spot at SW19 after coming through Wimbledon Qualifying.

Kartal came up against fifth seed Erika Andreeva, the older sister of French Open semi-finalist Mirra, with the elder Andreeva creeping back into the top 100 going into this week.

The 22-year-old pushed past Suzan Lamens and Sijia Wei in the first two rounds and soon found herself a double break up in the opening set of the third round.

From there, the bright talent cruised through in style, taking a 6-3, 6-1 win following a sublime match point.

Kartal said: “I’m really happy with that match, it was a big occasion, I don’t think it got to me at all so I’m proud of that.

“Physically I’ve got a lot better, mentally I’ve played a lot of matches on a bigger stage now, I’m getting used to that pressure which is cumulative over the past couple of years.

“Going into it, I know I played three great matches this week against three great opponents and that’s definitely given me a lot of confidence going into next week.”

Kartal was awarded a wild card into the main draw at Wimbledon for each of the last two years, coming up against Madison Keys in the first round last year.

Following a spell off court to focus on her health earlier this year, Kartal admits she never believed she would make the grass-court season but has relished an encouraging rise since returning to train in April.

With a dreamy draw spot sealed, the British hopeful feels third time could be the charm in south west London next week and knows momentum is on her side after three wins in Roehampton.

She said: “Having played there the last two years, I really wanted to be back there this year, having to earn my spot makes it a little bit better for me.

“I didn’t think that I’d be on court this year, so I managed to get back after a few months and go straight into the deep end and play some big events so I’m super proud of that.

“Everyone in that tournament is that great opponent, I don’t think there’s going to be an easy match so whoever I get, that’s what it is.

“I’ve taken two losses at Wimbledon the last two years so I’m hoping it’s third time lucky this year.”
