Wimbledon 2024: Andy Lapthorne and Guy Sasson finish quad doubles runners-up

• 3 MINUTE READ

Andy Lapthorne and Guy Sasson have finished quad doubles runners-up after losing out in a tight three-set battle to top seeds Niels Vink and Sam Schroder 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 in the Wimbledon final.

Today's final marked Lapthorne and Sasson's second successive Grand Slam doubles final together, after they also finished runners-up to Vink and Schroder at Roland Garros last month.

Their victory sees the dominant Dutch duo collect their third successive quad doubles title at the All England Club, after prevailing in just under three hours.

Speaking on-court at the trophy ceremony, Lapthorne said, "I want to say well done to Sam and Niels, especially Niels. His coach hasn’t been very well, so I know how tough that must’ve been for you to come out and do what you’ve done today with the situation, you’ve got my respect and I hope everything goes well.

"They’re two amazing players and two great guys. We love being on the tour with them and I wish them the best for tomorrow (in the quad singles final). Lastly, to everyone who came out to watch quad wheelchair tennis when they said it would never be played at Wimbledon, thank you very much."

“It was a great final, we did our best – we fought for it and the crowd here is amazing," Sasson added. "I know also, back home everyone will be watching the match so unfortunately I have to apologise to all the spectator back home who saw the match because we lost but I know they support us and really want us to win and hopefully next time we’ll get it."

The British, Israeli team got off to fantastic start in the opening set against the eight-time Grand Slam winning pair as they caught a hold of the crucial break to take the opening set in 44 minutes.

However, the top seeded Dutch duo produced a perfect response to the setback as they edged ahead to a 2-0 lead in the second. Despite Lapthorne and Sasson stringing together a run of three games to level the scoreboard and eventually force a tie-break, the Dutchmen stormed ahead to a 4-0 lead to take us to a deciding set.

With the pendulum swinging firmly in the direction of Vink and Schroder, the now three-time Wimbledon champions blitzed ahead to another early break before Schroder closed out a third consecutive quad doubles title with a beautiful backhand return that kissed the baseline.

Speaking on clinching a hattrick of titles in SW19, quad world No.2 Vink said, "It means a lot to me. This tournament – it’s crazy how beautiful it is and to be able to play on this court with so many people is amazing. Thank you Andy and Guy - I think we played a very good match the four of us, and like Andy said, it’s good for tennis and hopefully we can do this more.

“I’m going to be honest, half way through that match I wasn’t sure we’d be able to pull it off but I’m very happy we did in the end," Schroder added. "It was very tough match but we managed to get through it. I want to thank Guy and Andy for a great final and thank you Niels again for playing with me, even when it wasn’t our best day today – we managed to get through it together, I think that’s the beauty of tennis.”

Vink and Schroder will now have to put their emphatic doubles victory behind them as they prepare to face each other across the net in tomorrow's quad singles final.
