Lexus Birmingham Open 2026: Alexandra Eala headlines strong women's singles line-up

• 2 minute read

Alexandra Eala is set to compete in the first event of the 2026 grass court tennis season, as the entry list was announced for the WTA draw at the Lexus Birmingham Open.

The Philippines’ Eala enjoyed a breakout 2025 season, starting with a run to the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Miami Open as a wild card, propelling her into the world’s top 100.

Eala also enjoyed a successful grass court season, which began at last year’s Lexus Birmingham Open before going on to reach her first WTA Tour final at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, which included a win over former Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Alongside Eala, the 2025 HSBC Championships winner Tatjana Maria will take to the courts, looking to enjoy another stellar season on the grass.

Maria enjoyed a fairytale run in London last summer, coming through qualifying to become the first women’s champion at The Queen’s Club in over half a century.

Indonesia’s Janice Tjen, enjoyed a rapid rise in 2025, which saw her go from 411 in the world to 53 by the end of the season. She's currently the world No.39 and will be the top seed in Birmingham from 1-7 June.

Elsewhere, Australian stars Talia Gibson, Kimberly Birrell and Ajla Tomljanovic, former champion Beatriz Haddad Maia and Croatia's Antonia Ruzic will challenge for the title.

Last year, the Edgbaston Priory Club played host to a men's draw alongside women for the first time, and kicked off the grass court season as part of a revamped summer tennis calendar. Belgium's Greet Minnen is the defending women’s singles champion, after defeating Czechia’s Linda Fruhvirtova.

The men's ATP Challenger 125 entry list is set to be announced next week.

Kirsty Thomson, Tournament Director of the Lexus Birmingham Open, said, “We’re really excited to be welcoming Alexandra back to the Edgbaston Priory Club in 2026. She has proved a fan favourite wherever she plays around the world, and we look forward to welcoming her, along with many of the world’s best players – including last year’s HSBC Championships winner Tatjana Maria - to the Edgbaston Priory Club in June."
